Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter of 5 Menachem Av*, in which you write to me that you wished, first of all, to pursue your studies with ardor in order to make good use of your time. Then my letter arrived, communicating to you the program for these studies, and since then your motivation has been reduced.

I am surprised by all this, for I do not see the connection between the content of my letter and the weakening of your motivation. A man must use the time at his disposal in the most efficient manner. Hashem*, Creator of the world, Who directs it, has granted certain people capacities that they must make full use of. Thus, a study that can be conducted in a short time should not be prolonged over a long period. In this way, the remaining time can serve for other activities — for example, for studies or for action among those around you. What has just been said can be deduced from the Kuntres U'Maayan*, according to which a man possessing a profound intelligence is not for all that exempt from making efforts, with ardor and constancy. I therefore have good hope that you will make the most of your time and your capacities, according to the possibilities that have been granted to you. This will, moreover, have the advantage of developing your means, as indicated by the image of the limbs of the body whose faculties are increased when one trains them. ברכה ושלום! במענה למכתבה מה' מנ"א בו כותבת, שמתחלה רצתה ללמוד בהתמדה בכדי לנצל הזמן במילואו אלא שבינתים הגיע מכתב בנוגע לתכנית הלימודים, וזה מיעט בהחשק שלה ללימודים וכו'.

ולפלא מהי השייכות דתוכן מכתבי עם מיעוט החשק, שהרי הזמן שברשות האדם צריך הוא לנצלו באופן הכי יעיל, ואלו אשר השי"ת בורא עולם ומנהיגו חננם בכשרון צריכים לנצלו במילואו, ז.א. שאותו לימוד שיכול ללמדו במשך זמן קצר, אין מקום כלל וכלל להמשיכו למשך זמן ארוך, ובודאי אשר הזמן הנשאר יוכלו לנצלו לפעולות נוספות אם בלימוד אם בהשפעה בהסביבה וכיו"ב, ומובן האמור גם מהמבואר בקונטרס ומעין, איך שאפילו בעל שכל גדול צריך להיות לימודו דוקא באופן ד"יגעת" בהתמדה ושקידה.

ולכן תקותי שתנצל זמנה וכשרונותי' כפי היכולת שניתנו לה בזה, ומעלה נוספת בדבר שזה עצמו מוסיף בהיכולת וכידוע המשל מאברים הגשמים שעל ידי שעובדים בהם ככל הדרוש מתגדלת היכולת שלהם בעתיד...
