To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Azriel (note 1: Rav A. Chaikin, of Copenhagen. See, on his subject, Letter no. 4874),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 21 Menachem*, with what was enclosed therein. May Hashem* grant that you yourself and your wife invest yourselves in your sacred mission with the ten powers of your animal soul and, obviously, with those of the divine soul. In this way, not only will the body not obstruct, but moreover, it will itself act with integrity.

Thus will be fulfilled the promise of our Sages* according to which: "if you make efforts, they will be crowned with success." Indeed, there is here both a demand and an assurance. Moreover, it is indeed a matter of effort, in the most literal sense, and once it is provided, success is assured, as was explained here during a Chassidic* gathering. This text does not speak of comprehension or of reflection, for there would be nothing new in that. In fact, the Torah* assures that the success will be comparable to a found object (note 2: That one does not expect to find at all. Likewise, the result of the effort bears no proportion to the toil it imposes) and that one will have difficulty understanding that there is so little connection between them (note 3: Between the effort and its result). This is self-evident. May Hashem* grant you the merit of announcing good news in an ever-increasing manner. Indeed, we are approaching the month of Elul*, the month of mercy, during which each one recites (note 4: In the morning prayer and the afternoon prayer): "Hashem* is my Light and my Salvation." With my blessing to convey good news,

שלום וברכה! במענה למכתבו מכ"א במנחם עם המצורף אליו, ויהי רצון שהוא וכן זוגתו תחי' זאלען זיך אריינווארפען בעבודת הקדש בעשר כחות הנפש הבהמית ופשיטא בעשר כחות הנפש דנפה"א, שבד"מ פשיטא שהגוף, לא רק שלא מבלבל אלא שעושה בשלימות, ואז בודאי תקוים הבטחת חז"ל יגעת (שזוהי דרישה וגם הבטחה, ופירוש יגעת ה"ה כפשוטו, יגעת, הארעווען, ואז) ומצאת, וכמבואר בהתועדות כאן, שלא נאמר השגת והבנת, שהרי בזה אין חידוש, אלא שהתורה מבטיחה שתהי' ההצלחה באופן של מציאה, שלכאורה אין מבינים איך זה אפשר להיות כ"כ למעלה מערך וק"ל. ויזכהו השי"ת לבשר טוב ובאופן דמוסיף והולך, והרי מתקרבים אנו לחדש אלול הוא חדש הרחמים אשר כ"א אומר ה' אורי וישעי וגו'.
