To the young Yaakov David (note 1: Rav Y. D. Shvitser, of Spring Valley),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of Sunday of Parshas Tetzei*, in which you ask me about the source of the soul of the Righteous of the Nations (note 2: Who put into practice the seven Mitzvos* of the descendants of Noach*). Here are the terms of the great Rav, Chassid* and Tzaddik*, Rabbi Hillel of Paritch*, in his Likkutei Biurim*, at page 47b: "The souls of the idolaters, whose goodness and beneficence have as their aim neither the putting into practice of the Will of Hashem* nor the feeling of pity toward their fellow, because they are cruel and motivated solely by their pride, emanate from the three forces of evil that are totally impure. In contrast, the Righteous of the Nations come from the Kelipas Nogah*, which can receive elevation, as is known."

You surely have knowledge of the three studies that concern everyone, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe*. These pertain to the Chumash*, the Tehilim*, and the Tanya*, and you observe them. At the very least, you will adopt them from now on, without making a vow of it. With my blessing to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

במענה למכתבו מיום א' פ' תצא, בשאלתו לשרש נשמת חסידי או"ה. ז"ל של הרה"ג הרה"ח והרה"צ וכו' מוהר"ר הלל מפאריטש (בס' ליקוטי ביאורים מז, ב): נפשות עובדי כוכבים שטוב וחסד שלהם אינו בשביל לקיים רצון ה' ולא בשביל הרחמנות על רעהו כי בטבעם אכזרים המה רק לגרמייהו בלבד הוא דעבדין להתייהר כי שרש נשמתם הוא משלש קליפות הטמאות לבד חסידי אוה"ע שנלקחים מנוגה כו' כידוע.
