Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letters of 24 Menachem Av* and 1 Elul*. I learned from them, with pleasure, of the strengthening and development of the youth of the Chabad* association, as well as the Chabad* women and girls, and above all, of the school Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak*. No doubt you will not be content with this. You will seek to add more, for it is said that "one ascends in matters of holiness." Now, an Injunction of our holy Torah*, Torah* of life, is also a force granted in order to put it into practice. May Hashem* grant that you influence your entire surroundings in this direction, orally and, even more, by giving the good example yourselves.

On the occasion of the new year that is approaching, for us and for all of Israel, for good and for blessing, I convey to you my wishes, to you and to all of yours, that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, materially and spiritually. With my blessing,

I respond to your questions:

A) How to affix a Mezuzah* on a door, outside of Eretz Yisrael*, in a rented house? I have not received a precise instruction on this matter. Here is how I myself proceed (note 2: See, on this subject, Letter no. 5716) and the manner in which I respond to those who ask me: the Mezuzos* are placed as soon as one moves in. Then, on the thirtieth day, one takes one and has it checked, or else exchanges it for another, more beautiful one. One then affixes it with a blessing, with the intention that this blessing also covers all the others.

B) What to do on one's birthday (note 3: See, on this subject, Letter no. 4948)? Recently, the custom has been adopted of giving Tzedakah* before the morning prayer and before Minchah*, of having a specific study of the revealed part of the Torah* and of Chassidus*, of properly learning, during the day, the Chumash*, the Tehilim*, and the Tanya* of that day, and then of secluding oneself (note 4: In order to take stock of the past year and to make good resolutions for the coming one), as the Hayom Yom* explains (note 5: At the date of 11 Nissan*).

ו נעם לי לקרות במכתבם ע"ד ביסוס והתפתחות עניני צעירי אגודת חב"ד ונשי חב"ד, ולכל לראש ע"ד ביסוס המוסד אהלי יוסף יצחק, ובודאי שלא יסתפקו בהנ"ל אלא שעוד יוסיפו בזה, והרי נצטוינו בזה דמעלין בקדש, וציווי תוה"ק תורת חיים הרי זה גם נתינת כח, ויהי רצון שבכל הסביבה ישפיעו בזה בדבור ועוד יותר ע"י היות דוגמא חי' בהענין.

ולקראת השנה החדשה, הבאה עלינו ועל כל ישראל לטובה ולברכה, הנני בזה להביע ברכתי להם ולכל אשר להם, ברכת כתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה ומתוקה בגשמיות וברוחניות.

בשאלתו: א) סדר קביעות מזוזה בחו"ל צ הדר בדירה שכורה.

לא שמעתי בזה הוראה בפי'. ומנהגי וכן מענתי לשואלי בזה: לקבוע המזוזות תיכף לכניסה. וביום הל' ליטול מזוזה א' ע"מ לבודקה או להחליפה ביפה יותר, ובכל אופן קביעות זו ביום הל' ה"ה בברכה ומכוונין על כל המזוזות.

ג) סדר דיום הולדת: נהגו לאחרונה צ נתינת צדקה לפני תפלת הבוקר והמנחה, שיעור מיוחד בנגלה ובחסידות, חת"ת דהיום דוקא ביום זה (התבודדות צ כמבואר בהיום יום).
