By the grace of Hashem*,

19 Elul* 5718,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 12 Elul*, in which you tell me that you do not feel an attraction for study. You request my blessing. Now, our holy Torah* says that a Jew always has the desire to fulfill the Mitzvos* of Hashem*. How much more so is this the case for the study of the Torah*, which surpasses all the other Precepts.

But the evil inclination combats this desire. In such a case, it is therefore up to you to fight against this evil inclination. For this, you must strengthen your commitment to the Torah* and to the Mitzvos*. In this way, your study will be fruitful, as will the action that flows from it. Every addition in this direction will multiply the blessings of Hashem* for your parents, since you request a blessing for them. As I said, all of this depends on your will. You surely observe the three well-known studies, which pertain to the Chumash*, the Tehilim*, and the Tanya*. With my blessing to convey good news of all this, that you be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

שלום וברכה! במענה למכתבו מי"ב אלול, בו כותב אשר אין חשק ללימוד וכו' ומבקש ברכה.

והנה כבר הודיעה תוה"ק אשר תמיד ישנו החשק לאיש הישראלי לקיים מצות השי"ת, ובפרט בתלמוד תורה שהיא כנגד כולם, אלא שהיצר הרע לוחם נגד חשק זה, וכיון שכן הוא המצב, הרי עליו להלחם ביצרו, והוא על ידי ההוספה בתורה ומצותי', ואזי יצליח בהלימוד והמעשה הבא על ידי לימוד זה, מובן שכל הוספה בענינים אלו תוסיף ברכות השי"ת עבור אביו ואמו שי' שמבקש ברכה עבורם, והדבר תלוי רק ברצונו כאמור.

בודאי שומר שלשת השיעורים דחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים.
