Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6529 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 18 · Letter 26

By the grace of Hashem*,

25 Tishrei* 5719,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the distinguished man, of vast knowledge, versed

in the sciences, who fears Hashem*, Rav Eliezer Aryeh

HaLevi, who is known as Dr. Finkelstein (note 1: See, on his subject, Letters no. 6958 and 7020),

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 17 Elul* and the books you were so kind as to send me for my library. I thank you for them and I have great hope that in the future, you will continue, from time to time, to send me the books that will be published. Please excuse the delay of my response, which was caused by the busy days that elapsed in the meantime. Some are astonished by the statement of our Sages* according to which: "Rebbi honored the rich." For my part, I understand it very well, based on a fundamental idea of the thought of the Baal Shem Tov*, which is as follows. Every event in the world, even the most insignificant, is an effect of Divine Providence*. All the more so if this event has a global scope and concerns many people.

The rich are people to whom Divine Providence* has granted the means of multiplying accomplishments in the world of the Holy One, blessed be He. Without a doubt, they therefore possess the moral forces that enable them to assume this mission, which is far more decisive than that of the average person and, how much more so, than that of the poor. Our holy master (note 2: Rabbi Yehudah the Prince, codifier of the Mishnah*, the one who "honored the rich") lived during a transitional era in the history of the people of Israel, which was passing from a relatively peaceful life to the period of persecutions and pursuits. He therefore had to mobilize all forces so that the people of Israel would overcome this trial, emerging from it whole and strengthened. For this reason, it was incumbent upon him to observe each person and to ensure that all capabilities were utilized. Consequently, he showed deference toward those who had received from Hashem* additional possibilities, which of course had to be placed in the service of all the values of Israel, just like all the other actions of our holy master. However, in accordance with the rule of the world, each person receives free will and Hashem* tests him to verify whether he fears Him, whether he observes His Mitzvos* and listens to His Voice. Here too, free choice is granted to every rich person, as it is said: "See, I have placed before you, on this day, life and good..." (note 3: As well as the opposite of this), so that one may put into practice the conclusion of this verse: "And you shall choose life," or its opposite, which Hashem* forbid.

It is clear that what is true for those who are rich in gold and silver is all the more so for those who are rich in their power to influence others, in their close or distant surroundings. Of course, the world has a Ruler and nothing in it is useless. Wealth must therefore be used in an active and positive manner. For it is in no way sufficient not to use it in the opposite manner. Indeed, an imperfect use is also a disorder introduced into the creation, all parts of which must resolutely contribute to the ultimate and sole purpose. It is unnecessary to specify that I am alluding to the true mission of our people, the people of the Elokim* of Avraham*, global and specific at once — which is a life based on our Torah*, Torah* of life, Torah* of integrity without compromise, whose greatness is to lead to action — that is, to the effective practice of the Mitzvos*, of which it is said: "One shall live by them," in daily existence.

Please excuse me for raising such a fundamental idea in my very first letter. You could, of course, be astonished by it. Do I truly hope that these few lines will have the desired effect? In fact, several answers can be given to this question. First of all, we live in an era in which many events occur that, some time ago, would have seemed inconceivable. Whoever meditates, even briefly, will observe at every step what transcends reason. Our Sages* were quite right to say that one must not believe that certain things cannot happen. Second point, in which one has, in Chassidus*, a profound faith — every Jew is defined by the verse as "the source of the gardens, a well of living waters." His nature and his character traits are such that, when one addresses him, when one presents to him extensively the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, there is no need to say more, for deep within, he accepts all of this from the outset. One must simply remove what may constitute an obstacle in any way and, thereupon, "the source of the gardens, a well of living waters" appears, flowing of itself. According to the expression of the Zohar*, this can happen "in a moment and in an instant."

Another idea is also essential. Divine Providence* has granted you a power of influence, which you exercise over many people, some of whom are themselves leaders, influential in certain circles. If these few lines are the origin of an effective change, this will spread and intensify through these men who benefit from your influence. I have somewhat developed these ideas in my letter addressed to all on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah* (note 4: This refers to Letter no. 6499), of which I enclose a copy. I hope it will interest you. With my respects and my blessing,
