Greetings and blessings,
After a particularly long interruption, I received your letter from the eve of Shabbos*. You tell me that, during the short winter days, because of your work, you do not always manage to study the daily passage of the Chumash* and the Chok LeYisrael* during the daytime (note 1: That is, while it is still daylight). You ask me whether you can do so during the night (note 2: See, on this subject, Letter no. 1502). I have not received a precise instruction on this matter. Regarding the Tehillim*, it seems to me that, if one knows them by heart, one should recite them from the middle of the night (note 3: That is, during the second half of the night) or before nightfall, but not between nightfall and its middle (note 4: During the first half of the night).
As for the Chumash* and the Chok LeYisrael*, you can study them not all at once, but in several sessions, throughout the day. Of course, this study can take place in your store. If, even there, you do not have the time, you may study it (note 5: During the night) with the commentary on each verse. When one cannot do otherwise, one can indeed consider that this study belongs to the Oral Torah*, all the more so since in our era, several opinions adopt a more lenient position and permit the study of the Written Torah* during the night. However, various works do indeed forbid it.

לאחרי הפסק הכי ארוך נתקבל מכתבו מעש"ק, בשאלתו אשר בימים הקצרים בימי החורף מפני טרדתו במשרתו, ספק בידו אם יספיק ללמוד השיעור חומש וחק לישראל במשך היום, ושואל אם ילמד זה בלילה.
והנה הוראה מפורשה לא שמעתי בזה, והנראה לי אשר בהנוגע לשיעור תהלים, הרי אם יודע המזמורים בע"פ, יש לאומרם לאחרי חצות לילה או קודם צאת הכוכבים, אבל לא מצאת הכוכבים ועד לחצות לילה.
ובהנוגע להשיעור חומש וחק לישראל, יכול ללמדם לא בבת אחת, כי אם לחלקם פסקא פסקא במשך היום וכמובן שאפשר גם בחנות, ובאם גם ע"ז לא יהי' הפנאי, אזי ילמדם עם פירוש על כל פסוק ופסוק אשר בשעת הדחק יש להסביר שזהו נכלל בכלל תורה שבע"פ ובפרט שבזמננו זה כמה מקילים בהענין דלימוד מקרא בלילה, אף שמובא זה בכמה ספרים...
