Volume 18 · Letter 32

By the grace of Hashem*,

First day of Rosh Chodesh*

MarCheshvan* 5719,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of this Monday, in which you speak to me about your sister, who has been married for several years but still has no children. I am surprised that you do not specify whether you have consulted a specialist doctor. If that is the case, you will consult one, at least now. As our Sages* say, commenting on the verse: "Heal, he shall heal" — "the Torah* has authorized the doctor to heal" (note 1: Such is the meaning of the repetition in the verse). In a Jew, the material and the spiritual go hand in hand. All constitute "a unique nation on the earth" and, in the words of the Alter Rebbe*, in his Iggeres HaKodesh*, chapter 9, earthly concerns do not separate them from the true Unity. She (note 2: The one for whom the blessing is sought) must therefore strengthen her commitment to the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, reinforce her trust in Hashem*, Creator of the world, Who directs it and grants, for all this, His Providence* to each individual.

It would be good, in such a situation, to verify whether their union did not have the effect of humiliating a Jewish man or woman (note 3: To whom one or the other had previously promised marriage), to whom apologies would need to be presented, in his or her presence or not. Likewise, one should check the Tefillin* of her husband and the Mezuzos* of their home, to ensure that they are all kosher*. She herself should observe the custom of Jewish women, which consists of setting aside Tzedakah* before lighting the candles on the eve of Shabbos* and the festivals. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,

You ask me about the Daas Zekeinim*, at the beginning of Bereishis*, according to which the world remained open to the north. This is indeed what is stated, in particular, by tractate Bava Basra* 25b, the Pirkei DeRabbi Eliezer*, chapter 3, the Zohar Chadash* on Shir HaShirim*, and the beginning of the Boraisa of Shmuel*. The explanation, according to astronomy, is found, among others, in the Sefer Toras HaOlah* of the Rama*, volume 2, and in the commentary of the Shevilei HaMeoros* on this Boraisa*.
