By the grace of Hashem*,

3 MarCheshvan* 5719,

Brooklyn,

To Myriam (note 1: M. Schechter, of Winnipeg), may you have long life,

Blessings and greetings,

I am responding to your letter of 29 Tishrei*, in which you ask me about the obligation to light candles on the eve of Shabbos* and the festivals, before marriage (note 2: On this subject, see also Letter no. 6849). Generally speaking, there are, in this matter, various customs. In some communities, young girls, from their earliest age — that is, several years before their Bas Mitzvah* — light candles on the eve of Shabbos* and the festivals, whereas in other communities, they do so only after marriage. In the family of the Rebbe*, in particular, the custom is to begin very early to light these candles (note 3: This letter was written before the Rebbe* launched the worldwide campaign for all young girls to light Shabbos* and festival candles).

In any case, as far as you are concerned, you are already Bas Mitzvah* and you therefore have the ability to put into practice the immense Mitzvah* of lighting the Shabbos* and festival candles, reciting a blessing on this occasion. It is therefore advisable that you commit to this, without making a vow. The Midrashim* of our Sages* specify the reward. In the simplest sense, the lighting of candles illuminates "the candle of Hashem* (which) is the soul of man" — the holy soul that every Jewish man and woman possesses. In this way, one can reveal an additional dimension in everything concerning the Mitzvos* of Hashem*. The addition then also manifests in material domains.

I hope that you devote yourself to the spreading of Judaism, for example by organizing recreational afternoons during Shabbos*. Between these festivals (note 4: From one Shabbos* to the next), you surely endeavor to influence those around you, to draw hearts close to our Father Who is in heaven, by putting His Mitzvos* into practice. And Hashem* will grant you success. With my blessing,
