6 MarCheshvan* 5719,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 1 Cheshvan* and to the one that preceded it. You relate unusual events, as they occurred in your view (note 1: That the recipient of this letter considers unusual). It seems that you cannot help thinking that what occurred is perhaps connected to the school bearing the name of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us, leader of Israel (note 2: Whose creation would pose a communal problem). In this matter as well, the saying of the Alter Rebbe* applies, that "one must live with the Parshah* of the week," as our Sages* explain, in particular the Ramban*, regarding the verse: "There was a famine in the land" (note 3: Whose responsibility was attributed to Avraham). But in this case, the veil that manifested at that time is in no way present (note 4: There is therefore absolutely no reason to connect any problem to the creation of this school). And it is about this that it is said: "Grant me wisdom through my enemies" (note 5: In the simple sense: "Make me wiser than my enemies" and, more deeply: "Grant me wisdom by observing my enemies" — that is, by drawing a lesson from their behavior), as I said in my letter addressed to the Chassidim*. You have surely seen it and taken note of it.
May Hashem* grant that you very quickly eliminate the very idea that all of this could be a test, as was explained during the Chassidic* farbrengen* (note 6: In particular those of 12 Tammuz*, 20 Menachem Av*, and Shabbos Parshas* Eikev 5718 (1958). See, on this subject, Letters no. 6768, 6770, 6775, 6794, 6826, 6828, 6831, 6871, 6894, 6971, 6975, and 6985), and that the words of the verse be fulfilled here: "And you shall spread out" — in an evident manner, in all the institutions of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, in the Holy Land, particularly in the domains to which you refer. You will give me good news, of a visible and tangible good, of your communal accomplishments and your personal concerns. Awaiting your good news,
