Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to the questions you pose in your letter of 6 Kislev*:

A) What attitude to adopt toward those who criticize Chassidus*? In your situation, you must not polemicize with them at all. Instead, you will redouble your ardor and constancy in the study of the revealed part of the Torah* and of Chassidus*. As you know, the assurance is given that a little light dispels much darkness. How much more so when it is a matter of much light.

B) How to concentrate one's thought on study and not let it wander? The best means, as is known, is to study from the text and also to pray from a Siddur*, whose words capture the thought. You surely have knowledge of the three fixed studies pertaining to the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*. At the very least, you will maintain them in the future. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,

במענה למכתבו מו' כסלו, בשאלותיו:

א) איך להתנהג עם אלו המדברים על תורת דא"ח תורת החסידות וכו'.

במעמדו ומצבו הוא, אין לו להכנס עמהם בוויכוחים כלל וכלל, ותמורת זה להוסיף בהתמדה ושקידה בלימודו בנגלה ובחסידות, וידועה ההבטחה, אשר אפילו מעט אור דוחה הרבה חשך ובפרט הרבה אור.

ב) עצה אשר המחשבה תתרכז בלימוד, ולא תשוטט הנה והנה.

ידועה העצה היעוצה, ללמוד מבפנים הספר וגם להתפלל מתוך הסידור, שהאותיות אוחזות את המחשבה.

בודאי יודע משלשת השיעורים דחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים, ועכ"פ ישמור עליהם מכאן ולהבא.
