Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 3 Kislev*, in which you briefly describe the organization of your life. You tell me that you do not have time to attend a class or to consult a book (note 1: The recipient of this letter claims that he devotes all his time to earning a livelihood). Of course, this is absolutely inaccurate. As you know, the Mishnah* states that "he who fulfills the Torah* in straitened circumstances (note 2: Despite the difficulties of doing so) will ultimately fulfill it in ease." This is expected of everyone, and all therefore possess, without a doubt, the necessary strengths to achieve it, for "the Holy One, blessed be He, does not act with tyranny toward His creatures." Despite all this, it would be good, in addition, to learn by heart several chapters of Mishnah* and at least one of the holy Tanya*. When going to the place where you earn your material livelihood and upon your return, you will thus fill your time with Torah*, thanks to these chapters that you will know by heart. You will repeat them orally or, at the very least, in thought.

Likewise, it would be good, each weekday morning before prayer, to set aside a few coins for Tzedakah*. This is also the means to earn one's livelihood more amply, in the most literal sense. You will also adopt the practice of reading Tehillim*, according to their monthly distribution, each day after the morning prayer. I hope that you will participate in the gatherings of the Chassidim* during these days of Kislev*, the month of miracles and of deliverance, in particular on the luminous day of 19 Kislev* (note 3: Date of the liberation of the Alter Rebbe* from the Tsarist prisons) — the Rosh Hashanah* of the teaching of Chassidus* and of Chassidic* practices. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,

במענה למכתבו מג' כסלו, בו כותב ראשי פרקים מהסתדרותם בחיים.

ומובן וגם פשוט, שמה שכותב שאינו יכול להשתתף בשיעור או לעיין בספרי קדש, אינו נכון כלל וכלל, והרי ידוע דבר המשנה המקיים את התורה מדוחק בטוח שסו"ס יקיימנה מתוך הרחבה, וכיון שנדרש זה בודאי שישנה היכולת לקיים הדרישה, שהרי אין הקב"ה בא בטרוניא עם בריותיו.

ובכ"ז מהנכון - נוסף על הנ"ל - ילמוד בעל פה איזה פרקים משניות ועכ"פ פרק אחד מספר תניא קדישא, ובהלכו למקום פרנסתו בגשמיות ובחזירתו, ימלא זמנו בתורה ע"י לימוד בעל פה בדבור או עכ"פ לעבור במחשבתו על הפרקים האמורים.

כן מהנכון אשר בכל יום חול קודם תפלת השחר, יפריש איזה פרוטה לצדקה, שגם זה סגולה להרחבת הפרנסה כפשוטה, וכן ישמור על התקנה, לאמר השיעור תהלים חדשי - כמו שנחלק התהלים לימי החדש - בכל יום אחר תפלת הבקר.

תקותי שישתתף בהתועדות אנ"ש בימי חדש כסלו חדש הנסים והגאולה וביחוד ביום הבהיר י"ט כסלו ראש השנה לתורת החסידות ודרכי החסידות.
