Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of the day after (note 2: The Rebbe* says: "Issru Chag*") the festival of the liberation of 19 Kislev*, in which you briefly describe what was accomplished on that day. May Hashem* grant that the influence of this day extend throughout the entire year and find its expression in daily life.

At a propitious moment, I will mention your name, that of your wife, and that of your son who has just been circumcised, Yaakov David, whom Hashem* will grant long life, so that you obtain the fulfillment of your needs, in accordance with what you write me. With my blessing for a joyous Chanukah*,

You ask me about the manner of assigning names (note 3: To children, based on the father's or mother's family). It is known that it is said in the Parshah* we have just read (note 4: Parshas* Vayishlach): "and he called," "and she called," "and she called" (note 5: The name of a child is assigned sometimes at the initiative of the father, sometimes at that of the mother), in verses 38, 3-5. Our masters, the authors of the Tosafos*, and the Ramban* comment on these verses.
