To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav Moshe Chaim Ephraim (note 1: Rav M. Ch. E. Bloch, of the Bronx),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of the fifth light (note 2: Of Chanukah*). You make reference to the Tzaddik*, the great Rav* and Chassid*, Rav Shmaryahu Noach Schneersohn of Bobroysk. Here is what I know of him: such was indeed his name. He was the grandson of the Tzemach Tzedek*. He departed this world on 15 Teves* 5683 (note 3: 1923) and is buried in Bobroysk. His grandchildren, whom Hashem* will grant long life, currently reside in the Holy Land, in Tel Aviv, and they are preparing the publication of his responsa, his discourses, and his commentaries on Chassidus*.

You also speak to me of the Tzaddik*, the great Rav* Shlomo Zalman of Kapust. You will consult, on his subject, the book Beis Rabbi*, volume 3, at the end of chapter 8. In fact, its author knew him personally. He writes: 'He bore the holy name of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya*, and that of his grandfather, the Chassid* Rav Shlomo Freyda's. On various occasions, he signed with only one of his first names, either Shlomo Zalman or else Sh. Zalman. Once, it was observed that he signed: Shlomo Sh. Zalman. He departed this world on 27 Iyar* 5660 (note 4: 1900). His only son was the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav Yehudah Leib, who was not a Rebbe*, but earned his livelihood from commerce.'

Under separate cover, you have been sent the compendium HaYom Yom*, at the beginning of which appears the genealogy of these persons and, more generally, that of the entire family of the author of the Tanya*. With my respects and my blessing,

במ"ש אודות הרה"צ הרה"ח והרה"ג כו' הרש"ז מק;63637#&אפוסט, עיין בספר בית רבי חלק ג' סוף פרק ח' [שמחבר הספר הכיר הנ"ל אישית], וז"ל "נשא את שמו הק' של רבנו הזקן נ"ע (כוונתו לבעל התניא) ושל זקנו הרה"ח ר' שלמה פריידעס זלה"ה, בכ"מ הי' חותם רק בשם אחד שלמה זלמן או ש' זלמן, במקום אחד ראינו חתימתו כזה שלמה ש' זלמן", והסתלקותו כ"ז אייר תר"ס ומ"כ בק;63637#&אפוסט, בנו יחידו הוו"ח אי"א נו"נ מו"ה יהודא ליב, לא נהג ברבנות כלל ופרנסתו הי' במסחר.

בפ"ע נשלח לכ' קובץ "היום יום" אשר בתחלתו נדפס סדר שלשלת היחס של הנ"ל משפחת אדמו"ר [בעל] התניא בכלל.
