To the Tzaddik*, Rav* and Chassid*, of illustrious lineage, Rav Moshe (note 1: Rav M. Epstein, of Tel Aviv) Shlita* HaLevi,

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of this Sunday and it seems to me that, in recent days, a reply was addressed to you by the directorship of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim*. On this occasion, I acknowledge receipt of your book Eish Das*, volume 6. May Hashem* grant that for many years to come, you redouble your ardor in Torah*.

May Hashem* also grant that you strengthen the most essential point, which is the imperative necessity for every Jew to study the inner dimension of the Torah*. This, in our era, has been revealed through Chassidus*. Moreover, such study must enable comprehension, as is systematically the case for the Oral Torah*. With regard to the latter, indeed, intellectual perception is indispensable in order for one to speak of study. You will consult, on this subject, the Magen Avraham* on the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 50, which is cited by the Likkutei Torah* of the Alter Rebbe*, in Parshas* Vayikra, in the Chassidic* discourse entitled 'Do not suppress,' on page 5b. And one knows the passionate words of Rabbi Chaim Vital, in his introduction to the Shaar HaHakdamos* (note 2: Explaining the necessity of studying the inner dimension of the Torah*). One also finds a lengthy exposition by the Rebbe Rashab* on the same subject, in his Kuntres Etz Chaim*. To someone such as you, it is surely unnecessary to add anything further. בהזדמנות זו, אאשר קבלת ספרו אש דת חלק ו', ויהי רצון אשר עוד רבות בשנים ירבה חיילים לאורייתא ויהי רצון שיוסיף בזה בהנקודה התיכונה ע"ד גודל ההכרח על כאו"א מבנ"י ללמוד פנימיות התורה שבדורנו נתגלתה בתורת החסידות, וההדגשה בזה על הענין דלימוד באופן דהשגה והבנה, וכדין לימוד תורה שבע"פ שנחשב ללימוד דוקא באם מבינים ומשיגים, יעוין מג"א שו"ע או"ח סי' נו"ן, הובא בלקו"ת לרבנו הזקן בויקרא ד"ה לא תשבית (ה, ב), וכבר מפורסמים דברים חוצבים להבות אש מהרח"ו בהקדמתו לשער ההקדמות, ומבוארים הענינים בארוכה לאדמו"ר מוהרש"ב בקונטרס עץ חיים שלו, ובודאי שלדכוותי' אין הענין דורש אריכות כלל וכלל.
