By the grace of Hashem*,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of the 5th of Teves*. At the conclusion of all the reasoning, all the calculations inherent to this world, you conclude your letter by speaking of your rent and you affirm to me that you are indebted in dollars. Do you truly think that one should stir up the worlds on account of this? Moreover, a simple effort would enable you to resolve your material debt and, with an additional effort, the same could be true for your spiritual debt. Indeed, when a man sanctifies himself somewhat here below, he receives, from above, an immense sanctification. But all of this lies deposited in a chest and it is therefore up to you to open it. Moreover, this opening need only be the size of a needle's point. As soon as it is made, Hashem* will create for you an opening like the portal of the Sanctuary.

You tell me that you do not know what your objective is. Now, the Sages* tell us, in the Mishnah*, according to which man was created to serve his Creator. Nevertheless, there are different ways of doing so and what does it matter if, for you, it is a matter of drawing the hearts of your students closer to our Father Who is in heaven, by being the emissary of the prayers of the children of Israel, provided that you fulfill your mission in tranquility, joy, and enthusiasm? May Hashem* grant that you not seek to convince yourself that all of this disturbs you, for all these obstacles do not exist and all that is expected of you is that you open like the point of a needle so that what has just been said may come to pass.

I was pleased by the report of your visit with your students. May Hashem* grant, as was said, that you not content yourself with your current situation, but that you spread forth, in a pleasant manner. And nothing resists the will. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,

במענה על מכתבו מה' טבת.

לאחרי כל החשבונות, חשבונו של עולם וכו' הנה סו"ס מסיים במכתבו בהנוגע לשכירות ושהוא בע"ח בדאלארען וכו'!

והאומנם גם לדעתו יש להרעיש עולמות על ענינים כאלו? ובפרט שבהשתדלות קצת יסלק החוב שלו בגשמיות ובהשתדלות קצת יותר בידו לסלק גם החוב שלו ברחניות [שהרי כשאדם מקדש עצמו מעט מלמטה מקדשין אותו הרבה מלמעלה], ואם כן הכל כמונח בקופסא, ורק שצריך הוא לפתוח הקופסא, ומספיק פתח כחודו של מחט ואז יפתח השי"ת כפתחו של אולם.

במ"ש שאין יודע מה מטרתו. - כבר הודיעו רז"ל במשנתם, שנברא לשמש את קונו, אלא שכמה אופנים בזה, ומה איכפת לו אם יעשה זה ע"י קירוב לבם של התלמידים שלו לאבינו שבשמים וע"י שיהי' שליח לתפלות בנ"י וכו' ובלבד שימלא התפקיד במנוחה ושמחה וטוב לבב.

ויהי רצון שלא יחפוץ איינריידין זיך, שהענינים מבלבלים אותו, כי אין בלבולים ורק מחכים שיפתח כחודו של מחט ואז יהי' כנ"ל.

נהניתי מהדו"ח מבקורו עם התלמידים שלו, ויהי רצון שע"ד האמור לא יסתפק במעמדו כי אם יתפשט בדרכי נועם, ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון.
