Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6678 — Prayer

Volume 18 · Letter 175

By the grace of Hashem*,

9 Shevat* 5719,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

After a particularly long interruption, I have received your letter of this Wednesday, in which you ask me about what is said at the beginning of the Tur* and the Shulchan Aruch* regarding the expression: "I have placed Hashem* before me always." You suggest that a man could deceive himself through such a thought. In my opinion, what is said in the Tur* and the Shulchan Aruch*, as well as the simple meaning of this verse, is not a prayer or a request, but rather a description of a judicious and even indispensable conduct, as the explanation of the Rambam* on this subject also shows, which is likewise cited by the Tur* and the Shulchan Aruch*.

I seize this opportunity to clarify for you the deeper meaning of all this. According to Chassidus*, the expression "I have placed" describes the intimate consequence of placing Hashem* before oneself, in the most literal sense. The Tzavaas HaRivash*, of the Baal Shem Tov*, explains on this subject that one who truly has Hashem* before him will have a constant demeanor, in the terms of the Mishnah*, at the beginning of chapter 9 of Tractate Berachos*: "In every measure that He evaluates for you." The Tzavaas HaRivash* develops a lengthy explanation on this subject. With my respects and my blessing to convey good news,
