Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6720 — Halachah
Volume 18 · Letter 217 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem*,
11 Adar Rishon* 5719,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, of vast knowledge, Rav Yitzchak Yaakov (note 1: Rav Yitzchak Yaakov Weiss, of Manchester. See, on his subject, Letter no. 4227),
Greetings and blessings,
I have received, with pleasure, your letter from the eve of Shabbos* and, subsequently, your book, volume 2 of Minchas Yitzchak*. I thank you for what you have sent me and I hope that in the future, you will also honor me with what you publish. May Hashem* grant that, for many more years, you redouble your ardor in the Torah* and in its application, through the Halachah*, since such is the criterion that establishes that it is rigorously true (note 2: Since the result of study immediately receives a concrete application).
And, our Sages* say, in tractate Eruvin* 3b, that "the one and the other (note 3: When the Torah reports a controversy. Regarding study, one can admit two opposing opinions, study both of them) express the words of the Elokim* of life," but "the Halachah* is decided according to his opinion" (note 4: The Halachah can only retain one single opinion), for it is said: "Elokim* is with him" (note 5: A necessary condition for the Halachah to be decided according to his opinion), as tractate Sanhedrin* 106b emphasizes, and one can deduce that this is indeed so from the statement of our Sages*, in tractate Bava Basra* 156b, according to which: "One does not learn the Halachah*..." As a sign of friendship and as you request at the end of your letter, I reproduce here some remarks on your book (note 6: These have not reached us). Furthermore, our Sages* say that peace always reigns in the end (note 7: The controversies among the Sages do not undermine the friendship that reigns among them, however intense their discussions may be). With my respects and my blessing,
