Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6723 — Tzedakah

Volume 18 · Letter 220 · [15 Adar Richon 5719]

(15 Adar Rishon* 5719)

(note 1: This letter is the Rebbe's response to the following question posed to him. It is explained in the Chassidic* discourse entitled: "It is taught in the Midrash Tehillim*," which was delivered on 12 Tammuz* 5653 (1893) and published in the Sefer HaMaamarim* 5708 (1948), from page 271: "It is for this reason that it is said: 'Havayah* awoke as if from sleep' and 'Awake, why do You sleep, Havayah*?'" Now, these verses employ the Divine Name Adnai*.)

The Zohar*, volume 3, at page 293b and also at other references in this volume 3, explains that in the verse: "Havayah* awoke, as if He were sleeping," one must indeed retain the Name Havayah* in place of Adnai*. This is also what the Tanya* says, which applies its terms to Chochmah*, the force of intellectual discovery of the soul (note 2: Which itself is linked to the Name Havayah*).

The explanation given by the Zohar*, volume 3, and the Sefer HaLikkutim* of the Arizal*, on Tehillim*, at chapter 44, shows that the verse: "Why do You sleep, Havayah*" indeed refers to the Name Havayah*, since it corresponds to the state of torpor of the Attributes of emotion (note 3: These Attributes of emotion are themselves described by the Name Havayah*).
