By the grace of Hashem,

I greet you and bless you,

After a particularly long interruption, I received your letter of 7 Adar Sheni*, informing me of good tidings — the improvement of your state of health. May Hashem grant that you recover fully, in the most literal sense, and according to the meaning of this expression as explained in the Chassidic* discourse entitled "Maskil of Eisan HaEzrachi*," by the Alter Rebbe*, published in the Kuntres Limud HaChassidus* (note 1: Of the Frierdiker Rebbe*). And you will give me good tidings of all this, of your communal accomplishments, and of your personal concerns — the one depending on the other.

You tell me that someone asked you to define for him, in writing, what Chassidus* Chabad* is, and you ask me whether you are qualified to do so. Now, your interlocutor has certain particularities, and he will not accept explanations emanating from just anyone. As it happens, he approached you, and you must therefore accede to his request, to the extent of your knowledge. You wonder whether you are qualified to do so. You will therefore show him the references (note 2: Of the explanations given to him), and above all, you will share with him your concerns. For various reasons, it would be good to keep a copy of what you transmit to him. If appropriate, this may be useful elsewhere. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this and for a joyous Purim*,

לאחרי הפסק הכי ארוך, נתקבל מכתבו מז' אד"ש מבשר טוב מהטבת מצב בריאותו, ויהי רצון שיחזור לאיתנו כפשוטו ולאיתנו כמשמעו כמבואר בד"ה משכיל לאיתן האזרחי לרבנו הזקן (נדפס בקונטרס לימוד החסידות), ויבשר טוב בכל, הן בענינים הכללים והן בענינים הפרטים, אשר הא בהא תליא.

בשאלתו אשר פלוני בקשו להציע לו בכתב מהות חסידות חב"ד ושואל המוסמך הוא לכך.

הרי הנ"ל הוא מסוג מיוחד, שלא מכל אחד מקבל הסברה בהאמור, וכיון שפנה אליו, מהנכון למלאות בקשתו כפי ידיעותיו, ועל החששא שלו האם מוסמך לכך, - הנה בטח יציין להנ"ל המקורות, והעיקר שיאמר להנ"ל את החשש. ומכמה טעמים נכון שתהי' אצלו העתקה ממה שימסור להנ"ל, בכדי שבאם יהי' מתאים יוכל להשתמש בזה גם במקום אחר.
