By the grace of Hashem,

16 Adar Sheni* 5719,

Brooklyn, New York,

I greet you and bless you,

You inform me of your birthday. On this occasion, you have surely observed the customs that have recently been adopted by the Chassidim* on this day. May Hashem grant that you have a successful year, materially and spiritually. You will intensify your study of Torah* and your practice of mitzvos*, with breadth. With my blessing to study Torah* with the fear of Hashem (note 1: This letter is apparently addressed to a student of the Yeshivah*),

You tell me that there is no progress in the study and dissemination of Chassidus*. I am surprised by this, for we have received the injunction to know elevation in the domain of holiness. Moreover, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, states (note 2: See, on this subject, letters nos. 3379 and 6985) that in our era, each person must be considered as if he were scaling a very steep mountain, upon which one cannot remain in place. One must therefore ascend, or... (note 3: Tumble down). And one may apply to this the statement of our Sages* that the generation that will witness the coming of Moshiach* will be entirely meritorious or entirely guilty. This is self-evident.

לפלא מש"כ שבענין לימוד והפצת תוה"ח אין שינוי - והרי נצטוינו מעלין בקדש, ובפרט ע"פ דברי כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שבתקופתנו - כאו"א בדוגמת המטפס על הר משופע ביותר שא"א עמידה כ"א עלי' או כו'. - וג"ז יש להמליץ במרז"ל שדורו שמשיח בא הוא כולו זכאי או חייב. וק"ל.
