By the grace of Hashem,

To the distinguished members of the committee for the completion

of a Sefer Torah*, at the Rabbinical College of Newark,

may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet you and bless you,

I learned with pleasure of the completion of the Sefer Torah*, which will take place, with the help of Hashem, this coming Sunday. May Hashem grant that this occur at a good and fruitful moment. The merit of the mitzvah* will protect all those who take part in it. Our Sages* compare the greatness of the holy Torah* to that of the Jews, emphasizing that the one and the other are linked, that the one is inconceivable without the other. It is for this reason that the holy Torah* very often says: "Speak to the children of Yisrael*" or "Command the children of Yisrael*." When the completion of a Sefer Torah* takes place in a Yeshivah*, the relationship between the Jews and the Torah* is then even more clearly underscored. Indeed, the purpose of a Yeshivah* is to train students who will know how to appreciate the sanctity, the greatness, and the depth of the divine Torah* — not only in their hearts and in their minds, but also and above all in their concrete action, by fulfilling the Torah* and the mitzvos* in their daily existence.

May Hashem grant the Yeshivah* success in its holy mission, which consists of training students who will always remember that the Torah* is "our life and the length of our days." It is called Torah* of life, and its name has the same etymology as Hora'ah*, meaning teaching, which applies, in this case, to daily existence. The Torah* and the mitzvos* thus constitute an inexhaustible source of blessings emanating from the One Who gives the Torah*, for those who study it and for those who support it, as well as for the members of their families, both materially and spiritually. הגאולה שלו חגגנו זה עתה -

פתגם שיש לו משמעות מיוחדת לא רק בקשר לי״ט כסלו ,אלא גם

בקשר לחגיגה השנתית הצפויה של ישיבת ליובאוויטש)כ״ט טבת הבע״ל(;

גשמיות של יהודים היא רוחניות .הקב״ה נותן לנו גשמיות ,כדי

שניצור ממנה רוחניות.

במילים ספורות אלו טמון לימוד עמוק והוראה תמידית ,כיצד

צריכה להיות הגישה של יהודי לעניני צדקה בכלל ,ולישיבות ומוסדות

חינוך על טהרת הקודש ,בפרט:

כל שייכות יהודים -עם קדוש לה׳ -לגשמיות ,היא כי גשמיות של

יהודים -גשמיות כפי שיהודי-תורני מבין ומשיג -היא בעצם רוחניות,

ולרוחניות יש הרי ליהודי שייכות רבה מאוד .לכן הקב״ה נותן ליהודי

כמה שיותר גשמיות ,כדי שיהודי יעשה מכך כמה שיותר רוחניות.

הענין הרוחני הנעלה ביותר הוא הרי לימוד התורה וקיום המצוות,

עד להשגת הדרגה של דע את אלקי אביך ועבדהו בלב שלם וכנפש חפצה

להבין אלקות ולעבוד את ה׳ עם כל הלב וברצון טוב ,כפי שחסידותמורה ומבארת -עד לעבודת השם על־ידי כל העניינים של חיי היום־יום.

הענין החזק ביותר בגשמיות הוא הרי כסף -פרי עמלו של האדם

בכל כוחותיו.

על יהודי להמיר את הענין הגשמי החזק ביותר -בדבר הנעלה

ביותר ברוחניות.

בישיבת ליובאוויטש ,תומכי-תמימים ,מקבלת ההוראה הנזכרת של

אדמו״ר הזקן את מלוא הביטוי שלה בפועל .לכן ,לתמוך במוסד זה -

מבצר של תורה וחסידות -היא אחת הדרכים הטובות ביותר למלא את

הוראת אדמו״ר הזקן הנזכרת.

כעת כאשר ישיבת תומכי תמימים מתכוננת לחגיגה השנתית שלה,

יש לקוות שכל חובבי תורה ,ובמיוחד העסקנים והידידים של הישיבה,

יעשו מאמץ מיוחד להבטיח את הצלחת הארוע .וככל שכל אחד ואחת

מסר :״היום־יום״ כז טבת .וראה גם בעמוד הקודם ,ובנסמן בהערה שם.

יתנו יותר מהגשמיות שלהם -ממונם ,וכן גם הכוחות והזמן שלהם -

ויהפכו זאת לרוחניות -תורה ,עבודה וגמילות חסדים -כך הקב״ה יתן

להם יותר גשמיות ,מידו המלאה הפתוחה הקדושה והרחבה ,ויצליח את

כל אחד ואחת ובני ביתם שיחיו בגשמיות וברוחניות גם יחד.
