To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav* Alter (note 1: Rav* A. Hilevitch, of Johannesburg, South Africa. See, concerning him, letters nos. 5839 and 6870),

I greet you and bless you,

I received your letter of 11 Nissan*. In the meantime, you must have received mine of the same date. You tell me about a manuscript on which dates from the year 5555 (note 2: 1795) are inscribed. Of course, I am interested in knowing these dates. The same is true for the Torah Or* and the Likkutei Torah*, since you say that the dates brought to my knowledge are very few. But it is still necessary to continue research in the old manuscripts, in which a date has been preserved.

It seems, however, that the early Chassidim* did not pay attention to all this. They did not even seek the author of a Chassidic* discourse, convinced that it mattered little. For there is not, in this case, any controversy or Halachah* favoring one opinion over another (note 3: If that were the case, one would have had to give preference to one generation over another). Since then, I have begun to collect information on the subject, and from this has resulted, for the time being, an index of the discourses of the Rebbe Maharash* and one of the Rebbe Rashab*, whose merit protects us. With my respects and my blessing,

במ"ש אודות ביכל מאמרים שרשום עליהם תאריכים מהשנים תקנ"ה וכו', מובן שמעונין אני בידיעת תאריכים אלו, וגם בהנוגע לתו"א ולקו"ת שכותב כי רק מעטים ביותר שידועים לי עתה התאריכים דהנ"ל [אף שעדיין צריך חיפוש בכמה ביכלעך ישנים שלפעמים נשמר שם גם התאריך, אף שכנראה חסידים הראשונים לא דייקו כלל בהנ"ל ולא עוד אלא שגם לא התבוננו של מי הוא המאמר ובטענתם למאי נפק"מ, שהרי אין בזה ענין של פלוגתא והלכה כפ']. ומאז התחלתי לאסוף ידיעות בהאמור [שמזה בא בפועל לע"ע מפתח מאמרי אדמו"ר מוהר"ש ומפתח מאמרי אדמו"ר
