Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6823 — Prayer

By the grace of Hashem,

26 Nissan* 5719,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of this Thursday, in which you tell me that you are finishing your schooling and you indicate how you intend to continue your studies. It is self-evident that you must go to a Yeshivah* where one studies our Torah*, Torah* of life, throughout the entire day. Our holy Torah* is also a Torah* of life in the most literal sense — a guide for a happy life in every respect, materially and spiritually, as it is written: "If you walk in My statutes" — and our Sages*, cited by the commentary of Rashi*, specify: "by exerting your efforts in the Torah*." Then: "I will give your rains in their time," along with all the blessings stated in the Parshah*.

You tell me that according to some, one should accumulate all knowledge. However, it is impossible for a person to know everything. Even the most learned, among Jews as among other nations, possess only a small portion of knowledge. In any case, at your age, it is indispensable that you devote all your time, at least for several years, to the study of the Torah*, given by the Creator of the world, Who directs it. May Hashem grant that you pursue this study with enthusiasm and ardor. In this way, you will achieve success.

It would be good for you to maintain the practice of reciting Tehillim* according to their monthly division, every day, after the morning prayer. At the very least, you will do so in the future. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,

במענה למכתבו מיום החמישי, בו כותב אשר גומר הנהו בית הספר, וכותב סברתו בהנוגע להמשך לימודו.

ומובן וגם פשוט אשר עליו ללמוד בישיבה בה לומדים תורתנו הק' תורת חיים כל היום כולו, שתורתנו הק' גם תורת חיים כפשוטו "המורה דרך לחיים מאושרים בכל הפרטים הן בגשמיות והן ברוחניות", וכמ"ש אם בחקותי תלכו, ופירשו רז"ל (הובא בפירוש רש"י) שתהיו עמלים בתורה, ונתתי גשמיכם וגו' וככל הברכות המנויות בפרשה.

ובמ"ש שיש אומרים שצריך לדעת הכל, בכלל אי אפשר הוא אשר האדם ידע הכל, כי אפילו המלומדים ביותר, הן בבני ישראל והן באו"ה, יודעים רק חלק קטן מזה שאפשר לדעת, ובכל אופן בגילו הוא צריך ומוכרח להקדיש כל זמנו [לכל הפחות במשך שנים אחדות] רק ללימוד התורה אשר נתנה לנו מבורא עולם ומנהיגו, ויהי רצון אשר ילמוד בהתמדה ושקידה ויצליח.

מהנכון אשר ישמור על התקנה דאמירת השיעור תהלים חדשי - כמו שנחלק התהלים לימי החדש - בכל יום אחר תפלת הבקר, לכה"פ מכאן ולהבא.
