Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6833 — Prayer

By the grace of Hashem,

Nissan* 5719,

You ask me (note 1: This letter, addressed to Rav* Tzvi Freydin, was written directly on his letter, dated 13 Nissan* 5719) about the verse (note 2: At the beginning of Parshas* Nitzavim*): "You all stand this day..." There is, on this subject, no contradiction. For they (note 3: All categories of Jews) stood there: "to enter into the covenant," upon entering the Holy Land. And one finds the equivalent of this every year on Rosh Hashanah*, as the Likkutei Torah* explains at the beginning of Parshas* Tavo*.

You also ask me what is the obligation of gifts to the poor (note 4: During the day of Purim*), in addition to tzedakah*. It is clear that the Sages* impose the obligation to seek out poor people or even those who are in need. This is not comparable to the positive custom of giving tzedakah* before prayer (note 5: Without there being a necessity to find a poor person at that moment).

... במש"כ בפי' אתם נצבים היום גו' - אין בזה סתירה כי היו נצבים גו' לעברך בברית גו' בשעת כניסתן לארץ, ויש בחי' זו בכל שנה ושנה והוא ביום ר"ה. וראה לקו"ת ר"פ תבוא.

ובמש"כ מהו חיוב מתנות לאביונים נוסף על מצות הצדקה - פשוט כי מצוה מד"ס הוא לחפש באביונים, ואפילו על העני וכו' ולא רק מנהג טוב דצדקה לפני התפלה וכו'.
