By the grace of Hashem,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter, in which you tell me that you have become engaged, that the engagement was celebrated after the festival of Shavuos*, and that the wedding will be in 5720. However, in your letter, what you designate by the term engagement is not clear. Likewise, one does not understand why the wedding has been set so late. You surely know what my position has always been in this matter (note 1: That the wedding should be celebrated shortly after the engagement). It also seems that you make a distinction between an engagement that is a simple verbal commitment and a ceremony that includes the drafting of an official document. Perhaps this is the custom in the holy city of Yerushalayim* (note 2: Where the recipient of this letter was at the time), and it is said: "If you go to a city, adopt its customs." In any case, may Hashem grant that it be at a good and fruitful moment and that you establish a Chassidic* home.

I observed with satisfaction in your letter that you took part in the registration (note 3: Of new students in the schools of the Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak* Lubavitch network in the Holy Land) and that you met with success in this matter. No doubt your friends are doing the same with all the necessary diligence. May Hashem grant you the success of magnifying and adorning the Torah* through the development of this school. Without a doubt, this will be the channel and receptacle for achieving success in your personal concerns as well. At a propitious moment, I will mention your name at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, so that you obtain the satisfaction of your needs, as well as those of your mother, to whom Hashem will grant long life.

במענה למכתבו, בו כותב אשר התארס והתנאים יתקיימו לאחרי חג השבועות והחתונה בשנת תש"ך.

ואין ברור מכתבו מהו ענין ארוסין ומה הם התנאים ומה ההכרח לאחר החתונה לכו"כ זמן, ובודאי ידועה לו דעתי בזה מאז ומקדם. וכנראה כוונתו, באירוסין, שקורין א ווארט בעלמא, ותנאים כתיבת שטר, ואפשר שכך הוא מנהג ירושלים עיה"ק ת"ו ואתית לקרתא עבדת כנימוסאה.

ובכ"א יהי רצון שיהי' בשעה טובה ומוצלחת ולבנות בית חסידותי.

נעם לי לקרות במכתבו שעסק ברישום ושעבר בהצלחה, ובודאי גם שאר חבריו בעבודה זו עוסקים בזה במרץ הדרוש והשי"ת יצליחם גם הם להגדיל תורה ולהאדירה בהתפתחות ביה"ס, ובודאי זה הצנור והכלי להצלחה בעניניהם הפרטים.
