To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav* Pesach (note 1: Rav* P. Man, of Yerushalayim*),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of Tiferes of Tiferes* (note 2: The third day of the third week of the counting of the Omer*, corresponding to 2 Iyar*):

A) Your son Yaakov Peretz will be three years old on 5 Menachem* (note 3: Menachem Av*) next, and you ask me when you should give him his first haircut. From what can be deduced from the statements made on various occasions by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, it appears that one may not cut a child's hair before the age of three. However, his birthday is, in this case, at the beginning of the month of Av* (note 4: A period during which it is forbidden to cut one's hair), and if, Heaven forbid, the coming of our righteous Moshiach* is delayed until that date, you should schedule this haircut after Tishah B'Av* and it will be at a good and fruitful moment.

B) Do young girls light Shabbos* candles? According to the custom of the Rebbe's household and that of the Chassidim* who are aware of this practice, one begins to light them from the age of receiving an education, which is defined by the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 343, paragraph 3. It seems to me that until marriage, one lights only a single candle.

C) How should one place the second loaf (note 5: At the beginning of the meal, while reciting the blessing of HaMotzi*) on Friday evening and then the following day? On Friday evening, one places them side by side, and the following day, one raises the right loaf slightly above the left one, but only very slightly.

במענה למכתבו מתפארת שבתפארת.

א) לבנו יעקב פרץ שי' ימלאו שלש שנים ביום חמישי במנחם הבע"ל, ושואל מתי לעשות התספורת.

ע"פ המשמעות מדברי כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע בזמנים שונים, נראה שאין לספור השערות של הבן קודם מלאת שלש שנים, מאידך גיסא כיון שיום ההולדת הוא בתחלת חדש מנחם אב הנה באם ח"ו עד אז יתעכב ביאת משיח צדקנו, יעשו התספורת לאחרי תשעה באב, ויהי' בשעה טובה ומוצלחת.

ב) הדלקת הנרות ע"י נערות.

כפי הנוהג בבית הרב, ובבית אנ"ש היודעים מזה, מתחילות להדליק משהגיעו לחינוך, ועיין השיעור דחינוך, בשו"ע רבנו הזקן חלק או"ח סי' שמ"ג סעיף ג', וכמדומה שעד הנשואין מדליקות נר אחד.

ג) אופן הנחת הלחם משנה, בליל שבת ולמחרתו.

בליל שבת זו אצל זו, ולמחרתו באופן שהחלה מימין תהי' למעלה קצת על השני' אבל רק קצת.

ד) בשאר הענינים ששואל, ישאל את זקני אנ"ש אשר בסביבתו, איך נוהגים.
