I received your letter with the copy of what you wrote to that Rav*. You surely know that in various periodicals published in Yiddish in the United States, analyses of Freud's conception similar to the one you mention in your letter have been published. I have already stated, basing myself on one of the fundamental principles of Chassidus*, that there is no evil in the world without good. Now, various readers of periodicals are characterized by their superficiality (note 2: They pay only limited attention to the articles they read). In the absolute, this is very bad — worse even than lack of knowledge — for very often one does not grasp a subject as it truly is and one distorts it (note 3: Whereas one who lacks knowledge must at least acknowledge that he does not know).

On the other hand, in current circumstances, great good can result from such a situation. Indeed, due to our many sins, it would have been preferable that most of the journals and what is printed never see the light of day. The harm that all this causes is considerable and one can truly question their value. In such a case, superficiality is quite useful for limiting the harm and the damage caused. Very often, what is printed is considered a sensational piece of news. This is indeed the case in this instance and, the very next day, one goes looking for sensation elsewhere. Thus, the old disappears before the new.

It is surely unnecessary to point out to you that in the periodical that publishes your article, there are other texts that are even more clearly opposed to traditional Yiddishkeit* than this assessment of Freud. With my respects and my blessing,

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו עם העתקה מה שכתב להרב... שי' ובטח ידוע גם לו אשר בכמה מכ"ע הנדפסים באידיש בארצוה"ב, פרסמו בהנוגע לשיטתו של פרויד מעין ההערכה אודותה מזכיר במכתבו.

וכבר אמרתי, ע"פ אחד היסודות משיטת החסידות, שאין בעולם רע בלא טוב, שהשטחיות בה מצטיינים כו"כ מחוגי הקוראים מכ"ע, אף שתכונה רעה היא ביותר, שהרי השטחיות יש בה גרעון אפילו לגבי העדר הידיעה, כיון שתופסים את הענין לפעמים הכי קרובות שלא לאמיתתו ומסלפים אותו.

מאידך גיסא במצב ההווה טובה רבה צפונה בה, כיון שבעוה"ר רוב כותבי המכ"ע וענינים הנדפסים, מוטב להם שלא היו רואים אור הדפוס והפרסום והפסדם מרובה ותועלתם בספק גדול, מועילה השטחיות למעט ההיזק וההפסד, וברוב הפעמים תופסים ענין הנדפס רק כסנסציא, ובפרט בנדון כהאמור, וכטבע בנ"א למחרתו מחפשים סנסציא אחרת, וישן מפני חדש תוציאו.

ובודאי למותר להעיר אשר בהמכ"ע שנדפס המאמר הנ"ל ישנם מאמרים שהם בנגוד גדול יותר ליהדות המסורתית מאשר ההערכה ע"ד הנ"ל...
