I am responding to your letter of 27 Tishrei*, in which you tell me that you have heard from someone, as a certain fact, as a definitive ruling of science — as you yourself write in your letter — that the earth revolves around the sun, which contradicts the opposite conception, which seems to have to be dismissed by a great number of proofs. You ask me for a clarification on this matter.

It seems that you wish, above all, to know what is the opinion of scientists on this matter. In fact, in recent decades, all scientists devoted to this discipline have affirmed that no definitive position can be taken on this question. One cannot know whether it is the sun or the earth that remains in its place while the other revolves around it. Moreover, it has been stated, on the basis of several scientific principles, that one will never be able to find proofs and decide. According to science, each person can therefore hold whichever conception he wishes — to say that the earth is immobile and that the sun revolves around it, or the reverse. Those who develop science in our era and are familiar with the theory of relativity know all this.

As I said, this is the most recent and most certain scientific determination of all the scholars of our generation. In light of this, it is clear that all the verses dealing with the movement of the sun around the earth must indeed be interpreted in their literal sense. They therefore raise no difficulty.

במענה למכתבה מז"ך תשרי בו כותבת, אשר שמעה ממי שהוא בהחלט,

כאילו - כנראה ממכתבה - שזוהי החלטת המדע אשר ברור שהארץ סובבת את השמש וכו', ודלא כשיטה ההפכית, שכאילו הופרכה על ידי כמה הוכחות, ושואלת בירור בזה.

וכיון שכנראה מהאמור, רוצה לדעת לכל לראש מהי דעת אנשי מדע - הנה בעשיריות השנים האחרונות, החליטו כל אנשי המדע העוסקים בשטח זה, אשר אין כל החלטה בדבר, מי מהשמש והארץ עומד במקומו והשני מקיפו. ולא עוד, אלא שהחליטו על יסוד כמה שיקולים מדעים, שלעולם לא יוכל המדע להביא ראי' והוכחה בזה. וע"פ המדע כל איש ביכולתו לאחוז שיטה שירצה, או שהארץ עומדת והשמש סובבת אותה או להיפך, או ששניהם סובבים אחד את השני, וכידוע כל זה לאלו המתעסקים בהתפתחות המדעים בתקופתנו, מיוחסת על שיטת היחסיות.

וכאמור זוהי החלטה הכי האחרונה והכי מוחלטה של כל אנשי מדע בדורנו זה.

ועל פי זה מובן שכל המקראות המדברים אודות הליכות השמש מסביב לארץ וכו' - יש ללמדם כפשוטו, ואין על זה כל קושיא.
