To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

of many accomplishments, Rav* Shmuel (note 1: Rav* S. Wolkin, of Brooklyn),

I greet you and bless you,

I received your book, the responsa Zekan Aharon, volume 1, following our discussion when we met, and I thank you for it. I am grateful for this gift, and may Hashem grant that for many more years you devote yourself to the dissemination of the Torah*, in particular of the Halachah* concretely applicable to daily existence. If in every place and at all times, great has been the study that leads to action, how much more is it necessary in our era and in this country, where the numerical and structural majority of our brothers, the children of Yisrael*, is found. Simultaneously, those who mislead the weakened have multiplied, explaining to them that "Hashem desires the heart" (note 2: That one can therefore dispense with concrete practice) — that all the rest is secondary — which has the effect of eliminating the barrier between the Orthodox and the Conservatives. This confusion is so great that some call for such an elimination in the name of the fear of Hashem. It is difficult to say more, so painful and distressing is this.

We are in the days of which it is said: "Yisrael* encamped there, facing the mountain" (note 3: Of Sinai, just before the Giving of the Torah*). All the children of Yisrael* then united, which justifies the use of the singular in this verse — facing that mountain and all that characterized it. And you should consult the Midrash* Shemos* Rabbah, chapter 2, paragraph 4 and chapter 51, paragraph 8, which comments on all the names of this mountain in relation to the Torah* and the mitzvos*. May Hashem therefore grant that this situation be rectified soon. With my respects and my blessing, in the formulation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, that you receive the Torah* joyfully and in a profound manner,

ות"ח על תשורתו האמורה, ויהי רצון אשר עוד רבות בשנים יתעסק בהפצת התורה ובפרט בהנוגע הלכה למעשה בחיי היום יומים.

שאם בכל המקומות ובכל הזמנים גדול הלימוד שמביא לידי מעשה, עאכו"כ גדול ההכרח בתקופתנו זו ובמדינה זו, שבה נמצאים רוב מנין ורוב בנין של אחב"י.

וביחד עם זה רבו בעוה"ר המטעים את הנחשלים להסבירם אשר רחמנא לבא בעי, וכל השאר אין נוגע כל כך, ובמילא בטלים המחיצות שבין האורטודוכסים ובין שמרנים וכו' ועד כמה גדול הטעות שישנם כאלו המלבישים ביטול מחיצות באיצטלא של יראת שמים וכו' וקשה להאריך בדבר המצער ומכאיב.

ויהי רצון שכיון שנמצאים אנו בימים עליהם נאמר, ויחן שם ישראל נגד ההר, שכל ישראל (ויחן לשון יחיד) נתאחדו נגד ההר ועניניו. - ראה שמו"ר פ"ב, ד ופנ"א, ח, שמפרש כל השמות של ההר - בתומ"צ, הנה יתוקן מצב זה בקרוב ממש.
