I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 27 Iyar*, which I have just received. Its content is the following:

A) Should you incorporate into your specific donation (note 1: For the construction of a building for the Yeshivah* Lubavitch of Montreal, in addition to the annual donation given for its operation by the addressee) what you customarily give each year on the occasion of the annual appeal? This is indeed, in this case, a specific contribution, as we said. It is therefore quite clear that there is no reason to include your customary contributions in it. It is equally certain that a specific donation must not diminish your regular allocations for tzedakah*. This is self-evident.

B) May you retain this amount until the beginning of the construction, since that is its purpose? You will transmit this amount so that it reaches the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* of Montreal when you wish. However, in general, there is no reason to delay a gift to tzedakah* for any reason. You must, on the contrary, have it leave your domain as quickly as possible, with eagerness. In the words of the Alter Rebbe* in Igeres HaKodesh*, chapter 21: "First of all, everyone knows the value of eagerness in all the mitzvos* and that of our father Avraham* (note 2: At the binding of Yitzchak*) is immutable. He acted with marvelous ardor, in order to demonstrate his joy, his desire to put into practice the Will of the Creator and to give Him pleasure. But furthermore, this concerns, in particular, tzedakah*."

C) You wish to transmit this amount through my intermediary and you ask me whether I accept. Of course, I agree that it be deposited with me until the moment of its payment to the treasury of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* of Montreal.

We are on the eve of the festival of Shavuos*, the time of the giving of our Torah*. May Hashem therefore grant, in the formulation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, that you receive the Torah*, together with the members of your family, joyfully and in a profound manner. Then you will extend all this throughout the rest of the year, in all that concerns you. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,

במענה למכתבו מז"ך אייר, שז"ע נתקבל, ותוכנו:

א) אם בכלל נדבתם המיוחדת, יש להכניס את מה שנוהגים לנדב בכל שנה למגבית השנתית.

כיון שנדבה זו מיוחדת היא וכנ"ל וכמדובר, מובן שאין לכלול בזה נדבות שהורגלו בהן, וכן פשיטא שעל ידי נדבה המיוחדת לא יגרע להפרשתם לצדקה הרגילות, וק"ל.

ב) באם יכול לעכב הכספים אצלו, עד הזמן אשר יתחילו בבנין החדש, כיון שלתכלית זו רוצים לנדבם.

יכול למסור הסכום באופן שיגיע באיזה זמן שירצה בישיבת תומכי תמימים במאנטרעאל, אבל בצדקה בכלל אין ענין לעכב הכסף מאיזה סיבה, כי אם אדרבה להוציא הכסף מרשותו בהקדם ובזריזות, ובלשון רבנו הזקן באגה"ק שלו סי' כ"א "מלבד הידוע לכל גודל מעלת הזריזות בכל המצות כו' וזריזותי' דאברהם אבינו ע"ה היא העומדת לעד וכו' עשה זאת בזריזות נפלאה להראות שמחתו וחפצו למלאות רצון קונו ולעשות נחת רוח ליוצרו כו' ובפרט מעשה הצדקה וכו' ".

ג) רוצה למסור הכספים על ידי. האם מסכים הנני ע"ז.

מובן שמסכים אני שיהיו בפקדון אצלי עד שיבוא הזמן להכניס הסכום לקופת תומכי תמימים דמאנטרעאל האמורה.

ובהמצאנו בערב חג השבועות זמן מתן תורתנו, יהי רצון בנוסח כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שיקבלו הוא וב"ב שי' את התורה בשמחה ובפנימיות, וימשיכו זה על כל השנה בכל עניניהם.
