Igrot Kodesh · Letter 691 — Health
Volume 3 · Letter 297
By the grace of Hashem,
23 Menachem Av 5710,
To the Rabbi, distinguished Chassid*, who fears Hashem,
Rav D. M. [1], the shochet*,
Greetings and blessings,
I have received your letter and I learned, with pleasure, that the state of health of your wife is improving. May you always announce only good news, Amen.
You ask me about the series of Chassidic discourses Mayim Rabim of 5636 [2]:
A) Chapter 33 makes a difference between new creation and the renewal of what existed previously, according to Midrash Bereishis Rabbah 68:4, which says: "What does He do since the creation?"
You consider that this text cannot be interpreted in the literal sense — that creation lasted six days. But your question in no way weakens this proof, since this Midrash clearly introduces a distinction between the creation during these six days and that which is realized afterwards.
Briefly, here is how this Midrash is to be understood. The question that arises here is the following. Hashem, who transcends creation, reveals Himself in it through the dimensions of time and space. From there, in how much time did He create the world? The Midrash answers that He did so in six days. Then, the text asks what He does since then — that is, in what manner He reveals His Light to the world.
The reason why Hashem is called "Holy, blessed be He" is explained by Likkutei Torah, Tazria 22c, and other texts.
B) Chapter 34 explains how Hashem, who is infinite, created a finite world. It cites, on this subject, the image of a spring that flows continually and yet allows one to fill receptacles having precise dimensions.
You observe that the light of Hashem modifies the creation when the latter receives it, whereas the receptacle is not changed by the water it contains. You therefore think that the second image — that of the great scholar who transmits his wisdom to the humble disciple — is more appropriate.
On various occasions, for example in the Biurei HaZohar Vayishlach, Chassidus* cites this first image, but speaking of a river and in a somewhat more detailed manner, specifying that the wave rinses the receptacle.
The Chassidic discourse of Rosh Hashanah 5706 [3] defines three possible outcomes:
1. The vessel may be broken by it.
2. It may crack and no longer be able to contain, although that is its very purpose. The water that enters will therefore exit.
3. The water may also not enter the vessel, since the wave is infinite.
Consequently, the receptacle that receives the water is indeed modified by it. Nonetheless, the spring flows drop by drop, and these three possibilities therefore do not concern it.
One may also deepen this idea by asking the necessity of citing these two images, which assuredly are not given by chance. What does the second add to the first?
Very briefly, the explanation is the following. A priori, infinity possesses this character because its source is not limited, neither in the giving itself nor in the nature of the giver. Yet this is not the case, for two reasons.
And it is for this reason that these two images are stated. The first presents a spring that flows continually, but what it gives is limited to drops. The second is that of the scholar who does not teach continuously. For all that, the concept received by the disciple is indeed infinite in relation to his capacities. He must, indeed, wait forty years to perceive fully the teaching of his master. After this period, and thanks to the progress he has made in the meantime, he will understand all the depth of the wisdom that had then been transmitted to him.
For what is the subject of our discussion, perhaps there is here that which distinguishes the planets — which are immutable and do not give birth — from the species of the earth, which are mortal but give birth according to a continuous process.
The planets do not bestow their influence continually, but this influence does possess an infinite character, as chapter 33 says. The earthly species exert only a limited influence, but this is permanent.
All this could be developed, but what has been said suffices for the wise.
You will also consult Sefer HaChakirah, of the Tzemach Tzedek*, at the beginning of the first volume.
With my blessing of good physical and mental health, for yourself and for your wife,
Rav Menachem Schneerson
