To the young man, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav S. [1],

Greetings and blessings,

I have received your two letters of Rosh Chodesh and 8 Tammuz. After having obtained, from Rav B. G. [2], a report of the situation in North Africa, it seems good to me that you take charge of our educational institutions, which are there [3].

It is still difficult to determine precisely what your role will be in this place, since all this is new. Nonetheless, there is every reason to hope that there will be much to do to strengthen Torah and Yiddishkeit*. The success will therefore be considerable, by the strengths instilled by our head, my father-in-law, the Rebbe.

Great is the merit of those who find themselves in the same wagon as he. I mean that all this will also bring you good, as well as your wife. You will settle in and know a happy life.

I do not write to you, as you say in your letter, "as an individual." The students of the Yeshivah in particular, and all those who are bound to my father-in-law, the Rebbe, in general, are not "individual" persons but indeed lights, ready to illuminate their surroundings — vital men who intend to transmit their vitality, in an effective manner, to one, two, three other people. And their fruits will yield fruits, which in turn will bear fruits, until the end of the world — Olam, of the same etymology as Helem, the veil.

The reward of the Mitzvah* is the Mitzvah itself — in this case, the fact of taking on the mission one receives, in one's existence. Moreover, it is also the receptacle that allows one to contain and draw down the blessings, material and spiritual, of the Tzaddik*, who is present in this world more than during his lifetime. These will satisfy all needs.

To return to the details of your work, your wife will no doubt be able to participate, when the time comes. We will speak of it again when the date of your journey approaches. Nonetheless, the administrative procedures take some time. You will therefore submit your application as soon as possible. There are no doubt means of shortening the delay and the circuit for obtaining the authorizations. You will inform yourself precisely about all this.

שני מכתביו מר"ח וח' תמוז קבלתי, ואחרי הרצאת הרה"ח והרה"ג וכו' מהורב"ג שי' אדות הענינים באפריקא, הנה לפי דעתי, נכון הדבר אשר יקבל עליו העבודה בשדה החינוך במוסדותינו שם, ואף כי קשה עדיין לקבוע פרטי העבודה שם, כי הרי זה דבר חדש, בכל זה יש לקוות לכר נרחב במקצוע החזקת התורה והיהדות ובמילא להצלחה מופלגת בכחות נשיאנו, הוא כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר הכ"מ, ואשרי חלקם של כל אלו וואס וועלן זיין אפ זיין וואגען. ומובן מעצמו אשר כוונתי שנכון הדבר הוא גם לטובתו וטובת ב"ג תי' ולהסתדרות בחיים מאושרים.

ואיני כותב בזה, כלשון מכתבו אלי, "בתור אנשים פרטים" - כי תמימים בפרט והמקושרים לכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר הכ"מ בכלל, כל אחד ואחת מהם אינו פרטי, כי אם נר להאיר את כל הסביבה, ואישים חיים להחיות ולהחיות בפועל עוד אחד עוד שנים עוד שלשה וכו' ופירותיהם עושים פירות ופירי פירותיהן עד סוף כל העולם - ל' העלם והסתר. ונוסף על השכר מצוה המצוה עצמה שממלאים תפקידם בחיים, הרי זה גופא כלי המקבל וממשיך ברכות צדיק, דאשתכח עתה בהאי עלמא יתיר מבחיוהי, בגשמיות וברוחניות בכל המצטרך.

בפרטי עבודתו, ובטח תשתתף גם ב"ג תי' במשך הזמן בזה, עוד נתדבר כשיהי' קרוב יותר להנסיעה צלחה, אלא שכיון שהשגת הניירות לוקח זמן מסוים, טוב אשר יגישו הבקשה ע"ז בהקדם, ובטח יש אופנים ונוסחאות המקצרים את הזמן והחקו"ד עד שמגישים הניירות, ויתודע אדות זה על נכון.
