Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6958 — Yud Beis Kislev

Volume 18 · Letter 457

With the help of Hashem,

End of Tammuz 5719,

Brooklyn, N.Y.

To the honored Mr. Eliezer Aryeh HaLevi, may he live,

Known as Dr. Finkelstein[1]

Peace and blessing!

In a separate parcel you will receive our latest publications, and my hope is that they will be of benefit to the many.

On this occasion I wish to address one point in your letter, in which you write: "I am in no way a person of influence. In our circle there is no power of influence," etc.

Well known is the saying of my father-in-law, the Previous Rebbe,[2] on this kind of matter: just as it is necessary for every person to know his own shortcomings — for only then can a person correct them and live his life as he ought — so too, in the same measure, it is necessary to know one's own talents and capabilities and qualities.

And surely specifically in these days there is no need to elaborate with proofs that you are a person of influence, for according to my information, by the power of your influence you succeeded in bringing about an important turn to the right in the circles on which your influence operates.

And as was conveyed to me, if not for your intervention, several matters would have turned out in an utterly undesirable manner.

I understand that I do not know the particulars of the matters, but the words of truth are recognizable.

Surely unnecessary to elaborate also on the point that every success in a good action must certainly lead to increased efforts in this direction, and as our Sages of blessed memory said: "one who has one hundred wants two hundred" — an addition of one hundred; "and one who has two hundred wants four hundred" — an addition of two hundred. — And after requesting your forgiveness, essential matters and foundations of our faith — we anticipate and cry out for an essential change among those you influence.

As for what you write that there is only one path to influence — through increased Torah study, in the hope that "the light in it will return [those who have strayed] to the good," [which is said also] of those far from it — [this is true] despite the fact that the commandment of Talmud Torah is equivalent to all, and the light in the Torah has the power to return [those who have strayed] to the good; [yet] we are not permitted, and the hour also does not permit at all, to stand at a distance and hope for the fulfillment of the above. And especially since the discussion concerns those influenced who are themselves also influencers in a more-or-less large circle. Furthermore, we have the clear halachic ruling and directive in Pirkei Avos, that in order for his wisdom to endure (and the intent of the Mishnah* is certainly wisdom of Torah), his fear [of Heaven] must precede. And when one contemplates the character of our young people's souls in the United States, one sees that they are prepared — and even more than those in middle age — to receive true views without compromises; and on the contrary, any compromise weakens the power of the influence. And surely here too it is unnecessary to elaborate that the intent of "his fear precedes" is in its plain sense: that then the study leads to practical mitzvos, and as the wisest of all men summed up after all his investigation and examination: "Fear G-d (a fear that brings to) and keep His commandments, for this is the whole of man."[3]

The month of Tammuz is marked for us by special days — the 12th and 13th of it, the days of the redemption of my father-in-law, the Previous Rebbe, from his imprisonment in the Soviet Union. The stories of the lives of the leaders of Israel must serve as a living instruction and a lesson, and the inner point of those days of redemption is that one who truly fights for the truth, to the point of actual self-sacrifice, particularly in a matter concerning many, can — even as one individual — stand before and against a mighty regime, and even prevail over it.

With respect and blessing.
