Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6961 — Health
Volume 18 · Letter 460
By the grace of Hashem,
2 Menachem Av* 5719,
Brooklyn,
I greet you and bless you,
I have duly received your letter as well as the greetings you conveyed to me through the person from your city who came here. You envision a trip and a visit here. As is well known, I am not at all in favor of this, for various reasons. First of all, such a trip entails much effort and expense — a cost in eagerness, a financial cost, and a cost in health. Furthermore, every Chassid* of Paris and its surroundings has a broad domain in which he can fulfill the mission entrusted to man, in the words of the Mishnah*: "I was created to serve my Creator," which means that one must advance from one stage to another in the Torah* and the mitzvos*, for oneself and in the influence one exerts on one's fellow.
In addition to all this, when I observe those who come here and the change that occurs in them compared to the way they lived previously in Paris, I must acknowledge that, for the most part, they are under the grip of disillusionment, devoting a portion of their time to what was by no means necessary for them in the way of life that was theirs before arriving here. Now, they could have preserved this time for spirituality or, at least, for what is of interest, rather than losing it for what is accessory and concerns only the transient life, or even less than that. In a general way, our Sages* observe that it is difficult to reside in large cities. All the more so is this the case when it involves visiting a city of the United States — a country well known for the confusion it causes, for the presuppositions it imposes, for the noise of its streets. Certainly, within the four cubits of the Jews, it is a permitted street, but it nonetheless makes a person confused and diminishes him in various domains. If the majority of the Chassidim* who came from France to settle here listened to me, they would return, in kindness and in mercy, to settle in Paris and its region, in order to fulfill their mission of strengthening Yiddishkeit* in general and spreading the wellsprings in particular.
What has just been said also applies to those who came here for a few weeks. Practice has proven that they lost their time and their ardor. Above all, they introduced differences, showed that a Chassid* must devote his time and his strength not only to what concerns his animal soul, but even to still lower perspectives — to what would not even have occurred to them before their arrival here. And there is no need to say more, so painful is this. May Hashem grant that you spread these words, so that they succeed in convincing others to act on this basis, including those who are already here. I send you my blessing for good health. In tranquility, joy, and enthusiasm, you will devote yourself to the Torah* and the mitzvos* in the place where you now find yourself, and you will set an example for all the Chassidim* who are there or in the vicinity, so that they in turn do the same. Indeed, it is said that: "Hashem made man upright, but they have sought out many calculations." With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,
