By the grace of Hashem,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 7 Elul*, in which you speak to me about your brother, who participates in the gatherings of those who push away and lead astray (note 1: The missionaries), which Hashem forbid. I am surprised that you do not speak to me about his marriage. Has anyone attended to this, and with what results? Likewise, how does he earn a steady livelihood? Now, one can use these two points to influence his words and his views in various domains among those you cite. According to what your letter indicates, indeed, a logical discussion will not be of great use. It is therefore preferable to attract him toward the way of life that befits him. Thereupon, he will cease meeting those who lead him astray. Quite the contrary, he will evolve in a milieu opposed to them, or in any case in another milieu that does not concern itself with philosophical inquiry. Above all, one must find him a suitable occupation, for it is certain that he needs money to cover his various expenses. When he sees that he earns a livelihood and has means, one may think that he will be attracted. But, of course, his salary will be minimal, so that he does not have a feeling of independence.

It would be good to have the Mezuzos* of your apartment checked to ensure that they are all kosher, in accordance with the Halachah*. You will also have your father's Tefillin* checked, even if it may happen that he does not put them on. For they belong to him nonetheless. When they are kosher, it is certain that he will find a way to wear them, at least for a few moments. For great is the power of Tefillin* and, as our Sages* emphasize in Tractate Menachos* 44a, they attract life, including in its spiritual dimension, according to the specification of the Tur*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 237.

At a propitious moment, I will mention your name at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, in accordance with what you write to me. Everything is an effect of Divine Providence, and it happens that you addressed yourself to me. I will therefore emphasize, to you yourself and to the father of this young man, the necessity of setting a fixed time to study the inner dimension of the Torah* which, in our era, has been revealed through Chassidus*. Concerning it, Moshe, the faithful shepherd, said, according to the Zohar*, volume 3, page 124b, that "the side of evil is not found therein" (note 2: Evil has no hold there). Quite the contrary, it is through Chassidus* that the promise will be fulfilled according to which: "I will remove the spirit of impurity from the earth." If this necessity has been effective at all times and in all countries, how much more so is it at the present time and in this country. Just as you transmitted this request to me, may Hashem grant that you give me good tidings of it. With my blessing to give good tidings, to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

במענה למכתבו מז' אלול, בו כותב אודות אחיו שי' המבקר באסיפות של מסיתים ומדיחים ר"ל וכו'.

ולפלא שאינו מזכיר בהנוגע לעניני שידוכין לאחיו, האם התעסקו בזה ומה היו התוצאות וכו' וכן במה מתעסק בענין של פרנסה וכיו"ב בתור קביעות, והרי שתי נקודות אלו אפשר לנצלם להשפיע על דבוריו ועל השקפתו על כמה ענינים שאומרם, כי כנראה ממכתבו אין כ"כ תועלת מפלפול בשכל, כי אם להמשיכו לסדר חיים מתאימים, שבד"מ לא יפגש עם המסיתים וכו' ואדרבה יהי' בסביבה הפכית או בסביבה אחרת שאין מתעסקים בחקירה פילוסופיא וכו', ויש להתענין במיוחד בהנוגע להתעסקות מתאימה בשבילו, שהרי בודאי זקוק הוא למעות בשביל הוצאות שונות וכיו"ב, וכשירגיש בעצמו משתכר ומרויח כסף, יש מקום לומר שימשיך זה אותו, אף שכמובן צריך לסדר שהריוח יהי' מינימלי, שלא יבוא להרגש שעצמאי הוא וכו'.

מהנכון לבדוק את המזוזות בדירתם שתהיינה כולן כשרות כדין וכן את התפילין של אחיו [אפילו את"ל שישנם ימים שאין מניחם, בכ"ז ה"ה שייכים לו], וכשתהינה כשרות בודאי ימצא עת הכושר שיניחם עכ"פ לאיזה רגעים וגדול כחם של תפילין שכפסק רז"ל (מנחות מד, א) ממשיכים חיים, שבזה גם חיים ברוחניות (ראה טור או"ח רסל"ז).

ובעת רצון יזכירוהו על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע מתאים לתוכן כתבו.

ומאחר שהכל בהשגחה פרטית ופנה אלי, הנה אעוררו ואת אביו שי' של המדובר, על ההכרח לקבוע עתים בלימוד פנימיות התורה אשר בדורנו נתגלתה בתורת החסידות, שע"ז אמר משה רעיא מהימנא (זח"ג קכד, ב) דלית תמן מסטרא דרע, ואדרבה מביאה כי רוח הטומאה אעביר מן הארץ, ואם בכל הזמנים ובכל המדינות הי' הכרח בזה עאכו"כ בתקופתנו ובמדינה זו ביחוד.
