Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7083 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 19 · Letter 52 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem,
21 Marcheshvan* 5720,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, of
multiple accomplishments, Rav Yaakov Yitzchak (note 1: Rav Y. I. Homenick, of Oak Park. See, regarding him, letter no. 6767),
I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter from the eve of Shabbos*, in which you ask me about what the holy Tanya* says, in chapter 12: "The intermediate man is one who has never truly been dominated by evil, who has never committed a transgression in his life and who will not commit one." You ask me whether teshuvah* inspired by the love of Hashem is effective in this matter (note 2: Whether it effectively erases the past) and enables one to be considered as if one had never committed a transgression. On the question itself, tractate Yoma* 86a stipulates that teshuvah* inspired by the love of Hashem retroactively uproots the transgression. As for the explanation given by the Tanya*, one can indeed raise the question, for the text specifies: "He has never been called 'wicked' throughout his life, not even for a single instant." This is what chapter 1 says, and: "if subsequently he attains teshuvah*, he is called a perfect Tzaddik*." Therefore, even if the formulation does not establish it in an obvious manner, I interpret the beginning of chapter 12 of the Tanya* as follows: the intermediate man is one who has nothing in common with transgression, has not committed one in the past and will not do so in the future. Perhaps, in the past, this was not the case, but in the meantime, a change has occurred, thanks to the effort invested and the actions accomplished. What has just been said will also allow one to understand what the Tanya* says at the beginning of chapter 14: "Every person can be an intermediate man, at all times and at every moment," which means that even the avowed wicked person can attain this, since nothing withstands teshuvah*. Teshuvah* can therefore be accomplished in such a way that everything stated in chapter 12 no longer applies.
Although you say nothing about it, I have good hope that you will take advantage of the content and the possibilities brought by the month of Tishrei* in particular, which is moreover called the seventh month, sated with every good, as the Midrash Rabbah* says, at this reference, regarding this verse. And may Hashem also grant, given the general scope of this month for the entire year, that the blessing be revealed in all that concerns you, both personally and in communal matters, which includes the dissemination of the wellsprings (note 3: Of Chassidus*), until they reach the outside. Then, "the master shall come," the king Moshiach*. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,
