Volume 19 · Letter 60

By the grace of Hashem,

25 Marcheshvan* 5720,

Brooklyn,

I bless you and greet you,

I duly received your letter of 11 Marcheshvan*, in which you describe what has happened to you. You tell me that, for the time being, you are not yet engaged. Regarding the unfortunate events that occurred in the past, you know the teaching of our Torah*, Torah* of life, according to which a person can correct and improve his conduct in the future. And sincere regret for the past must be accompanied by a good resolution for the future. Moreover, regarding marriage, two additional points must be taken into account:

A) You must adopt the resolution, with appropriate determination, to conduct your home after your marriage in the manner befitting a Jewish woman, a descendant of Sarah*, Rivkah*, Rochel*, and Leah*. You will therefore observe family purity, Shabbos*, kashrus*, and put these precepts into concrete practice. In this way, Hashem will enable you to find the match that suits you, both materially and spiritually.

B) One must accept the truth as it is, understand that perfection does not exist in this world. There is therefore no cause to minutely search for the defects of those who are presented to you. Furthermore, you must tell yourself that the one who searches is not perfect either. If one looks upon Jews with benevolence, if one takes into account the essential — good feelings, upright conduct, that of the Torah* and the mitzvos* — one will accord only a secondary role to what is accessory and will not attribute disproportionate value to it. If the essential is present, then one should indicate one's agreement. After all this, it would be good, every weekday morning, for you to set aside a few coins for tzedakah*, until your marriage. And you will marry at a good and fruitful moment. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

the secretary,
