Igrot Kodesh · Letter 7099 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 19 · Letter 68 · To: jeune Lévi(1)
By the grace of Hashem,
1 Kislev* 5720,
Brooklyn,
To the young man Levi (note 1: L. Chizkiyah, of Lod),
I greet you and bless you,
I duly received your letter of 28 Marcheshvan*, in which you inform me of the positive evolution that has been observed in certain areas about which you had written to me. May Hashem grant that you give me good tidings also of the other areas. You are a Yeshivah* student, and it is therefore self-evident that you must, above all, further strengthen your study of the Torah*, with enthusiasm and ardor, and practice its mitzvos* in the best way. It is thus that you will multiply the blessings of Hashem in your needs.
You tell me that your father has adopted the positive practice of giving tzedakah* while reciting Vayevarech David* (note 2: "And David blessed," in the Pesukei DeZimrah of the morning prayer). This practice is based on the writings of the Arizal* and on various other texts. No doubt he will now maintain this favorable practice, which is also a means of giving tzedakah* before the prayer, since its essential part is the Shemoneh Esrei*, as the introduction of the Alter Rebbe* to his Siddur* explains. Nevertheless, one must, of course, add to this a gift for tzedakah* before the entirety of the prayer (note 3: The Rebbe notes at the bottom of the page: "The Pri Megadim, Orach Chaim, end of chapter 92, considers that the tzedakah preceding the prayer is given when one says Vayevarech David. And indeed, the gift of tzedakah while pronouncing these words does precede the prayer. Nevertheless, the Alter Rebbe writes, in his Shulchan Aruch, in chapters 51 and 92, that these are indeed two different practices. Therefore, these are indeed two distinct gifts. This is particularly the case if one takes into account the manner of performing these gifts, as explained by the Siddur of the Alter Rebbe, regarding Vayevarech David, Iggeres HaKodesh of the Alter Rebbe, chapter 8, and the commentary of the Tzemach Tzedek on Tehillim, chapter 17. There are indeed two divergent conceptions. Certainly, the gift before prayer is cited by the Shulchan Aruch, at the end of chapter 92. However, the moment preceding the entire prayer is more propitious for tzedakah. It is clear that one should not interrupt, by giving tzedakah, between the end of the blessings of the Shema and the Amidah, as stated in chapter 92. But this point will not be developed here."). With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,
For the Rebbe Shlita*,
the secretary,
