Igrot Kodesh · Letter 713 — Torah Study

Volume 3 · Letter 319 · To: distingué ‘Hassid

By the grace of Hashem,
9 Elul 5710,

To the distinguished Chassid*, who fears Hashem, ...

Greetings and blessings,

I reply to your letter of 24 Menachem Av, with the request for blessing that was attached. As you wish, I will read the latter at the gravesite of my father-in-law, the Rebbe.

I am surprised that you have not yet replied to my question. I asked whether you had set a fixed time to study Torah in general and the teachings of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, in particular.

You know the saying of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, which evokes "the troubles of the Chassidim*." When these arise, they remember the Rebbe and Chassidus*, write a letter to ask a blessing. Then, when all is well, one stays under his vine and the other under his fig tree.

You had the merit, in a supernatural manner, of seeing the holy face of my father-in-law, the Rebbe. I do not know why it is so necessary to convince you of the importance of studying his teachings. And, after this proposal has been made to you, you still reflect to know whether you should accept it, or whether other activities are more important.

It is obvious that my goal is not to show the contrary of mercy, Heaven forbid. But I am particularly surprised to see persons who can choose to be Chassidim of the Polish schools, Chassidim of troubles, Chassidim of their wife — or instead to be Chassidim in the manner closest possible to that which the masters of Chabad* Chassidus expect of us.

Some, indeed, have tasted the sweet light of this teaching, then they married, became occupied, so that they can now content themselves with a single line of Chassidus. One cannot ask more of them.

You will surely give me good news. Our Sages teach, in Tractate Kiddushin, that true good is not only good for the creatures, but is also good for Hashem. It is therefore the same for you, and there is no good but Torah and Mitzvos*, as the luminary of the Torah explains, which makes it possible to reintegrate the good, whatever the situation in which one finds oneself.

I conclude by wishing you to be inscribed and sealed for a good year,

Menachem Schneerson
