I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 3 Teves*, in which you describe to me briefly what your life has been. One of the recent developments in the religious domain is your recent return to the sources, to use your formulation — that is, to the source of living waters, that of our Torah* and its Mitzvos*, of which it is said: "One shall live by them." The formulation you employ — return to the sources — proves that there is not really anything new here. Quite the contrary, the person reintegrates the place that is truly his own. By advancing on this path, from one stage to the next, you will strengthen, from time to time, your conviction and your certainty that you must persevere in this direction, without being affected by the war that your evil inclination wages against you — which is capable of corrupting a person through various means, not only in the service of Hashem, but also in all his good actions. Indeed, those who are not pious among the other nations adopt the same attitude. Despite this, the evil inclination seduces and incites. But our Sages* have made known to us that the Creator of man granted him the necessary strength to prevail in this combat, to carry the victory, and to go forward from one stage to the next.

You also speak to me of the difficulties of your material situation. Consequently, you must accept the help of your mother, who herself does not live in affluence and must provide for the members of her family. Your letter does not clearly indicate what studies you are pursuing and how much time you will need to complete them. However, from what is reported here, several students in the same school as you already earn their living on a part-time basis while studying, at least during the last year or the last two years. They give private lessons, for example, without encroaching on the time necessary for the success of their studies. Furthermore, learning a trade is a means of settling into life in a more suitable manner for decades thereafter. An effort and the weariness resulting from it, for a certain time, are therefore investments that produce important fruits, far exceeding the effort expended, and thereafter preserved for a long time. It is certain that through this, you will have the ability to bring your mother immense satisfaction. She will observe the fruit of her effort and of the help she gave you to pursue and conclude your studies.

Of course, there is no reason to apologize for having written to me, and you will continue to do so in the future. I hope, however, that your next letters will give me good tidings in this matter. You will tell me, above all, that you have better morale, that you have strengthened your trust in Hashem, Who grants His Providence to each person, personally and in the slightest detail. במענה למכתבו מג' טבת, בו כותב ראשי פרקים מדברי ימי חייו, ומהשינוים אשר חלו לאחרונה בעניני דת, אשר חזר הוא - בסגנונו - בזמן האחרון אל המקורות, מקור מים חיים תורתנו ומצותי' עליהם נאמר וחי בהם.

שגם מסגנון זה - חזרה אל המקורות - מובן שלאמיתתו של דבר אין בזה ענין של חידוש בעצם, כי אם אדרבה חוזר האדם אל מקומו האמיתי, ולכן בהליכה בדרך האמורה מחיל אל חיל, הרי מזמן לזמן תתחזק הבטחה וההחלטיות להמשיך בזה, ובלבד שלא יתרשם ממלחמת היצר, אשר עלול הוא להשתמש לפתות את האדם בדרכים שונים ומשונים, ולא רק בעניני עבודת ה' אלא אפילו בענינים טובים סתם, שאפילו בלתי דתים מאומות העולם נוהגים בהם, ובכל זה היצר מפתה ומסית, והודיעונו חכמנו ז"ל אשר יוצר האדם נתן לכל אחד כחות להתגבר במלחמה זו ולנצחה, וללכת מחיל אל חיל.

במ"ש אודות הדוחק במצב הכלכלי, - שלכן זקוק הוא לקבלת עזר מאמו תחי' אף שמצבה גם היא דחוק ביותר ועלי' לפרנס ב"ב וכו'.

הנה אינו ברור במכתבו, באיזה מקצוע לומד וכמה זמן עוד נדרש עד שיגמור חוק לימודו, אבל בכלל כפי השמועה כאן, הרי כו"כ הלומדים באותו המוסד, ביחד עם לימודם, ובפרט בשנה ושנתים שלפני הגמר, מתעסקים גם בעניני פרנסה חלקית, כמו נתינת שיעורים פרטים וכיו"ב באופן שאינו נוגע כלל בהזמן הדרוש להם להצליח בלימודיהם, ואפילו עד אז - הנה לימוד מקצוע הרי זה הכנה לסידור מתאים יותר בחיים למשך עשיריות בשנים, ז.א. שהשתדלות ויגיעה במשך זמן הלימוד, הרי זה השקעה המביאה פרי טוב כמה פעמים ככה ובמשך זמן רב, שבודאי שבהשתדלות מצדו תהי' אז היכולת בידו להשביע את אמו תחי' ברוב נחת באופן שתראה פרי טוב בעמלה ובהעזר שעזרה לו ללמוד ולסיים לימודו.

מובן שאין מקום להתנצלות מצדו על שכותב לי, וגם בעתיד ינהג באופן כזה, אלא שתקותי שמכתביו הבאים יבשרו טוב בהענינים האמורים, ובזה לכל לראש מהטבת מצב רוחו ומהתחזקות בבטחונו בהשם יתברך המשגיח על כל אחד ואחד בהשגחה פרטית ועד לפרטי פרטים.
