To the officers and directors of the synagogue

Chevra Tzemach Tzedek*, of the rite of the Arizal*, 184 Henry Street,

New York, may Hashem grant you long life,

I greet you and bless you,

I have heard that the city administration of New York intends to demolish the building in which your synagogue and house of study is located. Without a doubt, you will receive, as the law stipulates, compensation of an amount that will enable you to acquire a synagogue and house of study in keeping with your customs and your particular traditions. It is no doubt unnecessary to call your attention, sufficiently in advance, to the necessity of finding a location, a building to which these institutions can be transferred, so that you may continue your activities according to your custom and your tradition of several decades — the rite of the Arizal*, with its specific practices relating to prayer and the synagogue, as well as the public studies of the Torah*, as the tradition of Israel dictates, in accord with the practice you have maintained until now.

In accordance with the teaching of our Sages*: "One counsels eagerness only to those who possess this quality by nature," I would like to add that without a doubt, you will indeed continue these activities in the new location of your synagogue and house of study, as has been the case until this day. I mean that you must be autonomous in all this, without associating yourselves with anyone, in order to fully preserve the possibility of maintaining your customs and your rite in all their purity. It is known how much our holy Torah* has emphasized the importance of such a practice, and our Sages* state, in Tractate Beitzah* 4b: "Take great care of the customs of your ancestors that have been transmitted to you." May Hashem grant that you meet with success, that you ensure the continuity of all the activities of the synagogue and house of study Tzemach Tzedek*, of the rite of the Arizal*, in an ever-increasing and ever more luminous manner. Very soon, the promise will be fulfilled that the synagogues and houses of study of Babylon will be reestablished in Eretz Yisrael*, with the coming of our righteous Moshiach*, in the true and complete Redemption. הגיעתני שמועה, אשר מטעם הנהלת העיר ניו יוארק, עומדים להסיר הבנין, בו נמצא, בית הכנסת ובית המדרש שלהם, ובודאי כדין וכחוק תמורת סכום מספיק לרכוש בית הכנסת ובית המדרש המתאים למנהגם ולענינם.

ובודאי למותר להעיר שימת לבבם, על ההכרח הגדול בעוד מועד למצוא מקום ובנין, לשם יוכלו להעביר בית הכנסת ובית המדרש להמשיך ענינם מתאים להנוסח ומסורה מכמה וכמה שנים נוסח האריז"ל ומנהגיו בעניני תפלה ועניני בית הכנסת בכלל, ביחד עם שיעורי תורה הנלמדים ברבים, כמנהג ישראל סבא, וכנוהג שלהם בבית הכנסת ובית המדרש שלהם עד עתה.

אלא שע"פ מאמר רז"ל, אין מזרזין אלא למזורזין, באתי בזה להוסיף, אשר בודאי ובודאי ימשיכו בפעולות האמורות, בבית הכנסת ובית המדרש במקום החדש, כמו שהתנהגו עד עתה, כוונתי באופן עצמאי, מבלי שותפות וכיו"ב, בשביל שיהי' ביכולתם המלאה, לשמור על טהרת המנהגים והנוסח וכו', וכידוע גודל ההפלגה בזה בתורתנו הק', הזהרו במנהג אבותיכם בידיכם (ביצה ד, ע"ב).

ויהי רצון אשר חפץ ה' בידם יצליח, להמשיך בכל עניני בית הכנסת ובית המדרש צמח צדק נוסח האריז"ל, באופן דמוסיף והולך מוסיף ואור.

ובקרוב יקוים היעוד, עתידין בתי כנסיות ובתי מדרשות שבבבל שיקבעו בארץ ישראל, בביאת משיח צדקנו בגאולה האמיתית והשלימה.
