By the grace of Hashem,

15 Teves* 5720,

I greet you and bless you,

After a particularly long interruption, I duly received your letter of the third light (note 1: Of Chanukah*), in which you briefly describe your accomplishments and, more broadly, your participation in the activities of the youth of the Chabad* association and of the union of Yeshivah* students. May Hashem grant that you multiply them broadly, for this is indeed the necessity, the demand of the moment, and it is regarding this that it was said: "If you make efforts, they will be crowned with success." Moreover, the merit of the public comes to your aid, especially since we are in the bicentennial of the Hilloula* of the Baal Shem Tov*, a propitious year for disseminating the wellsprings — that is, the teaching of Chassidus*.

You tell me, at the end of your letter, that all this activity has no effect on your personal concerns (note 2: Which do not receive blessing, despite what is accomplished). Now, the Alter Rebbe* explains that by accomplishing all this, "one obtains a mind and a heart a thousand times more refined." It is therefore clear that this is indeed so in practice. Nevertheless, he employs the expression: "more refined," which indeed means that a certain action is still necessary to obtain this refinement of the mind and the heart. Thereupon, the action accomplished becomes a thousand times more fruitful. It is certain that it will be so for you, that you will not be affected by the advances of the evil inclination, wishing to discourage you, which Hashem forbid. Various texts of Chassidus* describe such a situation and state the means of remedying it, particularly the holy Tanya*, as shown by the index of themes at its end. With my blessing to be able to give good tidings of all that has been said,

לאחרי הפסק הכי ארוך, נתקבל מכתבו מנר השלישי, בו כותב ר"פ מפעולותיו מהשתתפותו בפעולות צעירי אגו"ח ואת"ה בכלל.

ויהי רצון שיוסיף בזה כהנה וכהנה, שהרי הכרח ודרישת השעה היא והובטחנו בכגון דא, יגעת ומצאת, ובפרט שזכות הרבים מסייעתו, וביחוד שהרי נמצאים אנו בשנת המאתים להסתלקות-הילולא של הבעש"ט ז"ל, שנת סגולה להפצת המעינות שהיא היא תורת החסידות.

במ"ש בסיום מכתבו, שכל הנ"ל אין פועל בו בעניניו הפרטים.

הנה כיון שרבנו הזקן כותב, אשר ע"י כל פעולה כהאמורות, נעשים מוחו ולבו זכים אלף פעמים ככה, בודאי ובודאי שכן הוא במציאות, אלא שמובן מלשונו, נעשים זכים, ז.

א. שעכ"פ איזה פעולה צריכה להיות בשביל לנצל הכשרה הכי מעולה של המוח והלב ואז הצלחת פעולה זו היא אלף פעמים ככה, ובודאי שכן יהי' בהנוגע אליו, ולא יתרשם מפיתוי היצר שרוצה לפעול בו איזה נפילת רוח ח"ו, ומבואר הענין והעצה לזה בכ"מ בדא"ח, ומהם בתניא קדישא כמסומן במפתח ענינים שבסופו.
