To Mr. Yosef (note 1: Y. Dekel, of Tel Aviv),

I bless you and greet you,

I received your letter some time ago. You transmit to me the Tanach* that you have published for the soldiers of Tzahal*. I would like to thank you for this valuable and precious gift. On this occasion, I would also like to commend you for the aesthetics of this edition. This is based on the verse, and on the words of our Sages* who comment upon it: "He is my Elokim and I will glorify Him: Render yourself pleasing before Him through the Mitzvos*" (note 2: By fulfilling them in the most beautiful manner). Now, if this has always been so, how much more is it the case in our era, in this orphaned generation, in which many are those who judge profound content according to outward appearance.

In this regard, I permit myself to formulate a remark which, if you accept it, can be put into practice as early as the next edition. Indeed, it is quite clear that when someone publishes a holy book, especially a Tanach* intended for soldiers, which will accompany them throughout their lives, not only on Shabbos* and the festivals, but also, and especially, during the weekdays, he must know that such a book will be in common use and will be used for a long time, which depends on its binding and its paper. Now, I observed in the copy that was sent to me that the paper is particularly thin. Of course, this presents an advantage since, in this way, the volume is not too thick and one can easily keep it in one's pocket. But, on the other hand, this paper is not at all sturdy and will barely withstand daily use. It seems to me that it can, moreover, stain easily. I have seen many books printed on a thin paper comparable to this one, which was nonetheless sturdier.

May Hashem grant that you use your possibilities and your capacities to disseminate traditional Judaism in ever wider and broader circles. To use your formulation, since you tell me that you are an official at the Ministry of Security, you yourself and your friends have the means to strengthen and hasten the security of each of those who belong to Tzahal*, among all of Israel, by reinforcing their faith and their trust in the Elokim of Israel. According to the twofold teaching of the Tanach*: "Blessed is the man who places his trust in Hashem. Hashem will be his fortress," "He shall be like a tree planted near a watercourse," with all the blessings mentioned in this text. With my respects and my blessing,

זה כבר נתקבל מכתבו, בו כותב ע"ד התנ"ך שהו"ל בשביל חיילי צה"ל, וזה לא כבר נתקבל גם התנ"ך. והנני בזה להביע לו תשואות חן עבור התשורה החשובה והיקרה הזאת.

בהזדמנות זו רצוני להגיש לו ברכה גם על ההידור שבהוצאה זו, והרי גם זה מיוסד על המקרא ודברי חכמינו ז"ל - זה א-לי ואנוהו - התנאה לפניו במצוות. ואם תמיד כך, על אחת כמה וכמה בדורנו זה, דור יתום, שרבים דנים על התוכן הפנימי מהחיצוניות שבדבר.

ארשה לי להעיר בקשר עם הנ"ל, בפרט אשר אם יסכים להערתי יש מקום

להגשימה בהוצאה רבה, והיא, אשר בודאי ובודאי שכוונת כל מו"ל של ספר-קודש, בפרט תנ"ך בשביל חיילים, וכיו"ב, שהספר ילווה אותם בחייהם לא רק בשבתות וימים טובים, אלא גם - ואדרבה הוא העיקר - בימות החול, זאת אומרת שיהי' הספר שימושי ויתקיים לימים רבים, שזה תלוי בכריכה, בנייר וכו'. וראיתי הנייר של הטופס שנשלח לי שהוא דק ביותר. ואף שכמובן תועלת בזה, שמשום כך אינו תופס כ"כ מקום בכמות, ונוח לקחתו בכיס וכיו"ב, אבל לאידך גיסא הנייר חלש ביותר לעמוד בשימוש יום-יומי, וכמדומה שעלול ג"כ לקבל כתמים בנקל. וראיתי כמה ספרים שנדפסו על נייר דק, אשר בדקות הוא כהנ"ל, אבל חזק יותר.

ויהי רצון אשר ינצל אפשרותו ויכלתו להפיץ היהדות המסורתית בחוגים ההולכים ומתרחבים ומתפשטים, ובלשון נופל על לשון, אשר כותב שהוא פקיד במשרד הבטחון, הרי בידיו ובידי חבריו לחזק ולקדם הבטחון של כל אחד ואחד בצה"ל, בתוככי כלל ישראל, על ידי חיזוק האמונה והבטחון באלקי ישראל, כהוראה הכפולה בתנ"ך - ברוך הגבר אשר יבטח בה' והי' ה' מבטחו, והי' כעץ שתול על מים גו' ככל הברכות המנויות שם.
