To the young man Yissachar Dov (note 1: I. D. Walles, of Yerushalayim*),

I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your letters of 6 and 21 Teves*, following the report of the activities conducted in Ir Ganim (note 2: In the outskirts of Yerushalayim*), which encountered many difficulties. You have, nevertheless, observed in this matter a success beyond what you expected. May Hashem grant that you see in this an additional teaching — that the obstacles encountered in the holy mission of disseminating the wellsprings (note 3: Of Chassidus*) to the outside and of Judaism in general, are but a trial, of which it is said: "For Hashem your Elokim is testing you..." (note 4: To know whether you fear Hashem your Elokim or not).

The Alter Rebbe* explains that Nissayon*, trial, evokes the verse: "I will raise My banner (Nissi*)," which introduces the idea of elevation. It is therefore clear that those who take part in such activities receive elevation in all that concerns them, including their personal concerns. As the Alter Rebbe* states, "his mind and his heart become a thousand times more refined." Thereupon, one can redouble one's ardor in these actions, everything is set right, and nothing prevents one from advancing from one stage to the next. Of course, you have the authorization and the merit to transmit all this to those who participate in all the activities intended to strengthen the holy institutions and to disseminate the wellsprings. May Hashem grant that one pronounce words emanating from the heart. In this way, they will penetrate the heart of those who hear them. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,

מאשרים קבלת מכתביו מו' וכ"א טבת, המשך הדו"ח מהפעולות בעיר גנים, שנתקלו בכמה קישוים וכו'.

ויהי רצון שכמו בהנ"ל ראו הצלחה למעלה מהמשוער, יווכחו שזוהי הוראה נוספת שהקישוים שפוגשים בעבודה הק' דהפצת המעינות חוצה והפצת היהדות בכלל, אין זה אלא נסיון, וענין נסיון ה"ז כמ"ש כי מנסה וגו' וכפירוש רבנו הזקן מנסה מל' ארים נס, הגבהה, ושבודאי שכל הלוקח חלק בכהנ"ל - פועל זה הגבהה בכל עניניו וגם בעניניו הפרטים. וכלשון רבנו הזקן, נעשים מוחו ולבו זכים אלף פעמים ככה, ואז הרי מוסיפים אומץ עוד יותר בפעולות האמורות, והענינים מסתדרים באופן דהליכה מחיל אל חיל.

ומובן שמרשותו ומזכותו למסור כל האמור לכל המשתתפים בפעולות בביסוס המוסדות הק' ובהפצת המעינות, ויהי רצון שיהיו דבריו יוצאים מן הלב ויכנסו ללב השומעים.
