To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, the Rav Shmuel Abba (note 1: Rav Sh. A. Snieg, of Munich. See, regarding him, letter no. 6002),

I greet you and bless you,

I duly received your letter of 24 Teves*, date of the Hilloula* of the Alter Rebbe*, together with the two requests for blessing which will be read, at a propitious moment, near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us. We are (note 2: An identical letter was sent to many people) on the eve of the day on which Moshe "explained this Torah*" (note 3: Rosh Chodesh* Shevat*, the first day of the eleventh month), and the verse continues immediately: "Go, travel, and inherit the land that Hashem swore to your ancestors to give them." Now, this promise has not yet been fully realized. Indeed, Tractate Sanhedrin* 90b states: "It does not say 'to give you,' but 'to give them.'" In fact, the promise of Hashem concerned the territory of ten peoples (note 4: Whereas only seven of them were actually received), as Rashi* emphasizes, based on the Sifri*, regarding the verse: "and to all its neighbors."

Now, when these days are "commemorated," they are also "relived." Already at that time, had one merited it, the conquest could have been complete and definitive. May Hashem therefore grant that this promise be fulfilled soon. Indeed, our Sages* see in this verse an allusion of the Torah* to the resurrection of the dead: "They shall awaken and rejoice, those who rest beneath the earth." He who resides in this resting place and whose Hilloula* we shall soon celebrate (note 5: The Frierdiker Rebbe*, whose Hilloula* is the 10th of Shevat*) will be at their head. עם ב' הפ"נ שיקראו על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע.

ויהי רצון שבהמצאנו בערב היום אשר הואיל משה באר את התורה הזאת, ומבאר תיכף, פנו וסעו לכם וגו' ורשו את הארץ אשר נשבע ה' לאבותיכם וגו' לתת להם וגו' - אשר הקיום במילואו בפועל לא נתקיים (עיין סנהדרין צ, ע"ב, לכם לא נאמר אלא לתת להם וכו', וכן הרי הארץ אשר נשבע, היא דעשר עממין, וכפרש"י (מספרי) עה"כ ואל כל שכניו).

והנה הימים האלה (כשהם) נזכרים (ה"ה גם) ונעשים, וכמו גם אז, אם זכו, הרי הי' הכבוש שלם וקיים.

הנה יקוים היעוד בעגלא דידן, וכדרז"ל שם, מכאן לתחיית המתים וכו', והקיצו ורננו שוכני עפר, ובעל הציון ובעל ההילולא הבע"ל בראשם.
