I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your two letters of 24 Teves*, date of the Hilloula* of the Alter Rebbe*. You ask me what to do with the payment you have received (note 1: As compensation from the insurance companies, following a car accident). According to what our Sages* say, in such a case, you will put it to a propitious use, on condition, of course, that you receive the full agreement of your wife, the Rebbetzin*. It is said that one does not establish a precise accounting regarding Tzedakah*. It would therefore be good to dedicate immediately approximately a fifth thereof (note 2: The accounting not being precise) to this purpose. Then, gradually, you will use the remainder for matters of Torah* and Mitzvos*.

Of course, this includes first and foremost the education of your children, based on holy values. In the meantime, you can invest this amount, so that the capital is preserved and bears fruit. You can, in addition, invest in trust funds (note 3: "Trust fund" in the original text). There too, you will set aside a portion for Tzedakah*, between a tenth and a fifth. Indeed, "one confers a merit upon a person even in his absence" (note 4: In this matter, by making him a beneficiary of these funds), especially since it concerns, in this case, a young girl who is under her father's responsibility (note 5: Who will benefit from the trust funds). No doubt you are preparing for the Hilloula* of the 10th of Shevat*, which is approaching (note 6: That of the Frierdiker Rebbe*). May Hashem grant that its impression remain perceptible throughout the entire year. With my blessing to give good tidings,

במ"ש מה לעשות עם הכספים שקבלו.

ע"פ מאמר רז"ל בכגון דא, יעשה בהם סגולה (כמובן באם הוא בהסכמתה המלאה של זוגתו הרבנית תחי'), מהנכון אשר לערך חומש (שהרי אין מדקדקין בעניני צדקה), יפריש תיכף לצדקה, ובהשאר ישתמשו במשך הזמן לעניני תורה ומצות, ובזה כמובן וגם פשוט הוצאות חינוך על טהרת הקדש של יו"ח שי', אלא שבינתים יוכלו להשקיע (אינוועסטירן) בענין שיהי' הקרן קיים ונושא פירות, ועד"ז, ז.א. בהנוגע להשקעה להטראסט פאנד, אלא שגם על זה יפרישו ממעותיהם הם לצדקה, בין מעשר לחומש, שהרי זכין לאדם שלא בפניו, ובפרט קטנה שברשות אבי' היא.

בטח מתכוננים ליום ההילולא יו"ד שבט הבע"ל, ויהי רצון שיהי' רישומו ניכר בכל השנה כולה.
