By the grace of Hashem,

I bless you and greet you,

I am responding to your letter of 26 Teves*, in which you inform me of what happened a month ago — a fire, which Hashem forbid. Through an effect of the kindness of Hashem, everything ultimately turned out well, but you do not know what the cause is. I am surprised by this, for the cause is mentioned in your letter, a few lines earlier. I quote you: "For many years, I have no longer put on Tefillin*." Now, our Sages* say regarding them that the entire Torah* was compared to them. This means, as the author of the Shulchan Aruch* specifies, that through them we remember the miracles and the wonders that Hashem accomplished for us, that He possesses the strength and the power over the celestial beings as over the terrestrial beings.

Thus, the Tefillin* commemorate the miracle, remind us that the Holy One, blessed be He, directs this world — the manner in which each person earns his livelihood, his state of health, all the points for which you solicit my blessing in your letter. I therefore have good hope that upon receiving this letter, you will begin to put on Tefillin*, every weekday. Likewise, you will pray every day, and if it is impossible to go to the synagogue to do so, you will pray at home. During the weekdays, before putting on the Tefillin*, you will give a few coins to Tzedakah*. May Hashem grant that you give me good tidings in this regard. At a propitious moment, I will mention your name near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, regarding what has been said above, the content of your letter, and also for all the members of your family. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,

במענה למכתבו מכ"ו טבת, בו כותב על מה שאירע לפני כחדש ימים, שריפה ל"ע ול"ע, ובחסדי השם יתברך עבר הכל בשלום ואינו יודע מה גרם וכו'.

ולפלא, שהרי במכתבו כתובה גם הסיבה, באיזה שורות לפני זה, וזה לשונו במכתבו, "ולא הנחתי תפילין כבר הרבה שנים בגלל וכו'".

והרי על מצות תפילין אמרו חז"ל, שהוקשה כל התורה כולה לתפילין, והכוונה בהם, כלשון [מרן] השולחן ערוך, כדי שנזכיר נסים ונפלאות שעשה עמנו וכו', ואשר לו (להשי"ת) הכח והממשלה בעליונים ובתחתונים.

זאת אומרת שתפילין מזכירים נס, ומזכירים אשר הקדוש ברוך הוא, המושל גם בעולם זה בהנוגע לעניני פרנסה, בריאות וכו' כל אותן הענינים עליהם מבקש ברכה במכתבו האמור.

ולכן תקותי אשר תיכף בקבלת המכתב, יתחיל להניח תפילין בכל יום חול, וכן להתפלל בכל יום ויום, וביום שאין באפשרית לו ללכת לבית הכנסת להתפלל, יתפלל בביתו, ובימות החול לפני הנחת התפילין יפריש פרוטות אחדות לצדקה, ויהי רצון שיבשר טוב בכל האמור.

בעת רצון אזכירו על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, להכתוב לעיל והאמור במכ' וכן את כל ב"ב שי'
