To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, the Rav Chaim Yitzchak (note 1: Rav Ch. I. Vilner, of Tel Aviv),

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of 27 Teves*:

A) At a propitious moment, your name will be mentioned near the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit protects us, in accordance with what you write to me. It is you who formulate this request, and may Hashem therefore grant that you also be the one who gives me good tidings thereof. These will also pertain to an addition to the study of Chassidus*, within the totality of our Torah*, Torah* of life. This will strengthen the invocation of the immense divine compassion that will be formulated by the one who rests in this holy resting place and who gave of his very person to disseminate the wellsprings (note 2: Of Chassidus*) to the outside.

B) You ask me about the statement of the Zohar*, vol. 2, p. 134a, according to which Vaed (forever) can be read, after a permutation of letters, as Echad (one) (note 3: See, on this subject, letter no. 408). Various texts, in particular the lengthy analysis appearing in the Kovetz Lubavitch*, fascicle no. 11 (note 4: Published in the Igros Kodesh* of the Rebbe, vol. 2, letter no. 220), explain all this. The central idea is as follows. The Aleph* and the Vav* can be replaced by the letters Aleph*, Hei*, Vav*, Yud*, and the Ches* and the Ayin* by the letters Aleph*, Ches*, Hei*, Ayin*, which are gutturals. The large Daled*, for its part, can be replaced by a regular Daled*. The significance of these permutations is extensively commented upon in the Imrei Binah*, Shaar* of the Shema Yisrael*, of the Mitteler Rebbe*, as well as in the subsequent works of Chassidus*.

C) You observe that, according to the Targum Yonasan* (note 5: See the lengthy explanation in the Likkutei Sichos*, vol. 6, p. 304) on the verse Shemos* 14:21, the names of the six Mothers of Israel were engraved on the staff (note 6: Of Moshe), and you point out that one ordinarily speaks of the four Mothers of Israel (note 7: Not counting Bilhah* and Zilpah*) — Sarah*, Rivkah*, Rachel*, and Leah* — for the terms "Patriarchs" and "Mothers" designate them. One can simply explain that on this staff were mentioned not only the Patriarchs but also all the tribes. Therefore, the mothers of the sons of Yaakov* were also added.

I enclose a copy of the letter (note 8: This refers to the preceding letter) that I addressed to all on the occasion of the Hilloula* of the 10th of Shevat*, which is approaching. May Hashem grant that you also give me good tidings of its content. With my blessing to give good tidings of all this,

בעת רצון יזכירוהו על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע מתאים לתוכן כתבו, ויהי רצון שכשם שכתב הבקשה כן יבשר טוב בזה, ובזה גם מהוספה בלימוד תורת החסידות בתוככי כללות תורתנו תורת חיים, שזה יוסיף בהתעוררות ר"ר של בעל הציון הק', שמסר נפשו על הפצת המעינות חוצה.

ב) לשאלתו במ"ש אשר ועד הוא אחד בחילופי אתוון (זח"ב קלד, א), מבואר בכ"מ, ובארוכה בקובץ ליובאוויטש חוברת י"א, וקוטב הענין אשר אל"ף וא"ו, מתחלפים באותיות אהו"י, וחי"ת עי"ן - באותיות אחה"ע מהגרון, וד' רבתי בד' רגיל, הרמז בחילופים אלו מבואר בארוכה, באמרי בינה שער הק"ש לאדמו"ר האמצעי, ובספרי חסידות שלאחרי זה.

ג) במ"ש בתרגום יונתן, שמות יד, כ"א שעל המטה חקוקים כו' וששה אמהות ומעיר, שהרי רגיל בכ"מ ד' אמהות (שרה רבקה רחל ולאה) ואין קורין אבות ואמהות אלא כו'.

י"ל בפשיטות, אשר בהמטה הוזכרו לאו דוקא האבות כ"א כל שבט ושבט, שלכן הוסיפו גם האם של כאו"א.
