By the grace of Hashem,

I greet you and bless you,

I am responding to your letter of the fourth light (note 1: Of Chanukah*), which I have just received, for it seems that it was sent by ordinary mail. You speak to me of a prisoner who does not wish to present a request for pardon, so as not to give the impression that he is guilty of a transgression he did not commit. It seems to me that in such a case, the request can emanate from his wife or from another family member, which eliminates any risk of interpreting it as a confession. In this case, the family must receive the means of its sustenance, which further explains the distance from such an interpretation (note 2: Presenting himself as guilty would mean that, subsequently, he would have difficulty finding employment). In addition, one must explain to this prisoner that by being free, he will have the possibility, more easily and more quickly, of proving his innocence.

I received, in their time, your greetings which were duly conveyed to me. You write nothing regarding yourself personally. I hope that all is well and that you are in good health. Your mission is based on the love of one's fellow. Now, the Commandments: "You shall love your fellow as yourself" and "You shall love Hashem your Elokim" are one, as the Alter Rebbe* explains (note 3: See, on this subject, letters no. 6004 and 6633), based on Chassidus*, which is the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov*. The merit of this mission will therefore protect you in all that has been said and in consenting an addition, in good health, in tranquility of mind and body. במענה למכתבו מנר הרביעי שנתקבל ז"ע (שכנראה נשלח בדואר רגיל), בו כותב אודות האסיר שאינו רוצה להגיש בקשת חנינה, בכדי שלא יחשב הדבר כאילו מודה הוא על עון שחף ממנו.

וכמדומה לי שבכגון דא יכולה הבקשה לבוא מאשתו או מאחד מבני המשפחה, שזהו שולל הפירוש בהגשת בקשה כאילו יש בזה ענין של הודאה.

ובנדון דידן אשר זקוקה המשפחה לפרנסה וכו' - הרי שלילת פירוש האמור מובנת עוד יותר. ונוסף על הנ"ל הרי יש להסביר להאסיר, שבודאי בהיותו בחוץ יהי' בידו להוכיח אשר חף הוא מפשע - בקלות יותר ובמהירות יותר.

בזמנו קבלתי פ"ש מכת"ר ע"י מר... ואף שאין כת"ר כותב דבר בהנוגע לעצמו, תקותי אשר הסדר והשלום אתו, וזכות עבודתו בקדש מיוסדה על אהבת ישראל, אשר ואהבת לרעך כמוך חד הוא עם ואהבת את ה"א, וכידוע פירוש רבנו הזקן בזה, מיוסד בתורת החסידות שהיא היא תורת הבעש"ט ז"ל - תעמוד לו בכל האמור ולהוספה מתוך בריאות הנכונה ומנוחת הנפש והגוף.
